What is customer marketing?

Customer marketing refers to the strategies and activities a company uses to engage, retain, and grow its existing customer base. Unlike traditional marketing, which focuses on acquiring new customers, customer marketing is all about building strong relationships with current customers through personalized communication, loyalty programs, feedback collection, and targeted campaigns. The goal is to increase customer satisfaction, drive repeat business, and turn customers into brand advocates. Effective customer marketing can lead to higher customer lifetime value and positive word-of-mouth referrals.

How does a customer marketing professional typically collaborate with sales and product teams?

Customer Marketing professionals work closely with sales and product teams to align marketing strategies with customer needs and company goals. They often coordinate to develop targeted campaigns, gather customer feedback, and create materials that address specific client pain points. Regular meetings, cross-functional project teams, and shared performance metrics ensure everyone is working toward common objectives. This collaboration helps drive customer retention, upsell opportunities, and overall business growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a customer marketing professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Customer Marketing professional, you need a solid understanding of customer segmentation, campaign management, and data analysis, often supported by a degree in marketing or business. Familiarity with CRM platforms, marketing automation tools, and analytics software is typically required. Strong communication, creativity, and relationship-building skills help you engage customers and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These abilities are crucial for driving customer loyalty, increasing retention, and maximizing the impact of marketing initiatives.

What is the difference between Customer Marketing vs Content Marketing?

AspectCustomer MarketingContent Marketing
FocusBuilding customer loyalty, retention, and advocacyCreating and distributing valuable content to attract and engage audiences
Work EnvironmentCollaborates closely with sales, customer success, and product teamsWorks with marketing, creative teams, and external content creators
Common CertificationsCustomer experience, marketing, or CRM certificationsContent marketing, digital marketing, or communications certifications

Customer Marketing primarily focuses on engaging existing customers to foster loyalty and advocacy, often working closely with sales and customer success teams. Content Marketing, on the other hand, emphasizes creating content to attract new audiences and generate leads. While both roles require marketing knowledge, their goals and daily activities differ significantly, making them distinct but complementary functions within a company's marketing strategy.

What does a customer marketing do?

A customer marketing professional develops strategies to engage existing customers, increase retention, and promote loyalty through targeted campaigns, content, and communication. They analyze customer data, collaborate with sales and product teams, and often use tools like CRM software to tailor messaging and improve customer experience.

Job description

Location

Our Customer Marketing Manager will be an integral part of our global Marketing team. This role is remote-based, ideally in EST or CST in the US or Canada.

Who We Are

DoiT is a global technology company that works with cloud-driven organizations to leverage the cloud to drive business growth and innovation. We combine data, technology, and human expertise to ensure our customers operate in a well-architected and scalable state - from planning to production.

Delivering DoiT Cloud Intelligence, the only solution that integrates advanced technology with human intelligence, we help our customers solve complex multicloud problems and drive efficiency.

With decades of multicloud experience, we have specializations in Kubernetes, GenAI, CloudOps, and more. An award-winning strategic partner of AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure, we work alongside more than 4,000 customers worldwide.

The Opportunity

The Customer Marketing Manager, reporting to the VP, Global Marketing, is responsible for driving incremental revenue from DoiT's existing customer base by marketing new product releases and services to the customers most likely to adopt them.

This role is not a generic communications function. It works closely with Customer Success Managers (CSMs) and Account Managers (AMs) to turn customer insight into targeted, revenue-generating marketing.

You will partner with CSM and AM teams, Product Marketing, and Data/Analytics teams to identify which customers are most likely to adopt new products and services, and build campaigns that reach them through the channels customers actually use - customer portals, Slack, email, and other high-signal, non-paid channels.

This role sits at the intersection of:

  • Customer marketing and lifecycle campaigns
  • Cross-sell and upsell enablement for CSMs and AMs
  • Owned-channel campaign development (portal, Slack, email)

You are accountable for turning customer insight into measurable incremental revenue.

Responsibilities

  1. Customer Insight-Led Strategy & Segmentation
  • Partner with CSM, AM, Product, and Data/Analytics teams to identify usage signals, adoption patterns, and account characteristics that indicate readiness for a new product or service
  • Translate customer insight into segmented, prioritized target lists for each campaign
  • Ensure marketing effort is concentrated on the accounts most likely to convert, not broad-based awareness
  1. Campaign Development for Launch and Ongoing Use
  • Build customer marketing campaigns for new product and service launches, timed to initial go-to-market
  • Design those same campaigns as reusable, evergreen assets that CSMs and AMs can trigger on demand as new customers onboard or show adoption signals
  • Create toolkits, email sequences, and talk tracks that make it easy for CSMs and AMs to activate a campaign without marketing involvement
  • Maintain a library of always-on campaigns mapped to specific triggers, such as onboarding milestones, usage thresholds, and renewal windows
  1. Owned-Channel Marketing Execution

Lead marketing through the channels where customers already are:

  • Email: lifecycle, adoption, and revenue-focused campaigns, from strategy through copy and execution
  • Customer portal: targeted messaging, banners, and content promoting new products and services
  • Slack and community channels: announcements and engagement tied to product releases
  • Other non-paid customer channels, such as in-app messaging, customer newsletters, and webinars, as appropriate

Note: this role does not own digital advertising. The focus is on owned and alternate, non-paid customer channels.

  1. CSM & AM Enablement
  • Support CSMs and AMs with marketing materials, campaigns, and resources for the customer success and account management motion
  • Gather field feedback from CSMs and AMs to refine targeting, messaging, and timing
  • Share campaign performance data with CSMs and AMs to help inform future targeting
  1. Performance & Revenue Accountability

Partner with CSM, AM, Data/Analytics team, and Product Marketing to create visibility into:

  • Incremental revenue generated from customer marketing campaigns
  • Campaign engagement and conversion by segment
  • Adoption rate of new products and services among targeted accounts
  • Reuse rate of always-on campaigns by CSMs and AMs

Continuously refine targeting and channel mix based on performance data.

What Success Looks Like

  • Effective, insight-driven targeting for campaigns that CSMs and AMs trust
  • A growing library of reusable campaigns activated on demand across the customer base
  • Measurable incremental revenue tied to customer marketing campaigns
  • Strong day-to-day partnership with CSM and AM teams
  • Effective use of owned channels (portal, Slack, email) beyond traditional digital advertising

Qualifications

  • 2-3 years in B2B marketing, with a strong core in campaign marketing, particularly email
  • Experience with owned and alternate customer channels beyond digital advertising, such as customer portals, community platforms like Slack, lifecycle email, and in-app messaging
  • Experience in the B2B technology space
  • Customer marketing experience is a plus
  • Ability to use customer data and insight to help target and prioritize campaigns
  • Comfortable working hands-on to build and execute campaigns

Ideal Profile

  • Builds campaigns designed to be reused, not just launched once
  • Works well with CSMs and AMs as marketing partners
  • Comfortable with customer data and using it to prioritize effort
  • Prefers owned, relationship-driven channels over paid media
  • Data-driven and outcome-oriented
