What is a craft service?

A Craft Service job involves providing snacks, drinks, and light refreshments to cast and crew on a film or television set. Craft service workers help maintain a well-stocked table, keep the area clean, and sometimes assist with minor set needs. They differ from catering, which provides full meals, as craft services focus on continuous snacks and beverages throughout the day. The role requires organization, attention to detail, and the ability to work long hours on set.

What are the typical responsibilities of a craft service professional on a film or television set?

Craft Service professionals are responsible for setting up, maintaining, and replenishing snack and beverage stations for cast and crew throughout the production day. They handle inventory, ensure all food items meet safety and cleanliness standards, and often respond to special dietary needs or requests. The role requires regular interaction with other departments to schedule breaks and accommodate production changes. Being proactive and flexible is common, as filming hours can be unpredictable and demands can change quickly. This is an essential support position that keeps cast and crew energized and focused during long shoots.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the craft service position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Craft Service, you need organizational skills, basic food handling knowledge, and a keen attention to cleanliness and safety; a food handler's certificate is often required. Familiarity with catering equipment, inventory tracking, and safe food storage practices is important. Excellent customer service, adaptability, and strong teamwork make someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure a smooth, well-stocked set that meets the needs of cast and crew, maintaining morale and efficiency during production.
