What Are Writers?

Writers are content creators who use language to entertain, inform, or persuade audiences. They produce all written work available to the public, including books, newspaper articles, blog posts, website content, social media posts, and advertising copy. Examples of conventional writing careers are journalists, novelists, poets, screenwriters, technical writers, and copywriters. Writers may work freelance or as a staff writer for a company. Typical job duties include researching, organizing, planning, and outlining written work, in addition to writing, editing, and revising the pieces. To create quality content, writers need excellent language skills, proficiency in computer programs, and a mastery of online tools and resources.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Writer, you need strong command of language, grammar, and storytelling, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with word processing software, content management systems, and SEO tools is commonly required. Excellent research skills, creativity, and the ability to accept feedback are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure writers can produce engaging, accurate, and audience-appropriate content that meets the needs of clients or publications.

What are some common challenges writers face when working with editors or clients, and how can they be addressed?

Writers often encounter challenges such as unclear feedback, shifting project requirements, or differing expectations with editors or clients. Building strong communication skills, asking clarifying questions, and maintaining flexibility can help address these issues. It's also helpful to establish clear guidelines and deadlines at the outset to ensure everyone is on the same page. Over time, writers develop strategies for constructive collaboration, which is key to producing high-quality work and maintaining positive professional relationships.

Job description

In a Nutshell
Valve+Meter Performance Marketing is looking for a sharp, curious, and versatile Copywriter/Content Specialist to craft high-impact content that helps our clients win in competitive markets. In this role, you won't just be writing words-you'll be building narratives, clarifying complex ideas, and fueling demand generation for industrial, technical, and professional services brands.
You'll translate technical jargon into compelling stories, connect business value to audience needs, and balance creativity with performance-driven strategy. Whether it's a white paper, blog, case study, or web copy, your work will drive leads, engagement, and measurable results.
Why this Role Is Important
At Valve+Meter, we believe content plays a pivotal role in driving measurable business outcomes. In this role, you'll develop work that educates, influences, and inspires action across the marketing funnel, helping our clients stand out and grow in competitive B2B markets. Every piece you create will contribute directly to generating leads, nurturing prospects, and strengthening customer relationships.
You'll collaborate closely with SEO strategists, account managers, and our creative team to develop content that aligns with search strategy, supports sales objectives, and connects seamlessly with broader marketing initiatives. Acting as the bridge between client insights and audience engagement, you'll transform complex technical concepts into clear, persuasive narratives tailored to decision-makers.
Beyond writing, you'll play an essential part in shaping messaging strategies, contributing to editorial planning, and creating foundational content that fuels long-term marketing systems. Whether crafting an in-depth white paper or refining web copy for SEO, your work will help turn marketing efforts into a reliable engine for revenue.
This is a role for someone who thrives at the intersection of creativity, strategy, and performance. You'll have opportunities to collaborate across disciplines, explore new ideas, and see the tangible impact of your work reflected in client results. Here, content isn't filler-it's a catalyst for growth, and your expertise will help guide it.
About the Role - Key Responsibilities
In this marketing copywriter and content strategist role, you'll be responsible for creating and managing a variety of B2B content formats that support SEO, lead generation, and brand positioning. On any given day, you might be asked to:
  • Write and edit a range of B2B content formats, including blogs, white papers, case studies, website copy, landing pages, email campaigns, and thought leadership articles
  • Transform complex technical or industry-specific information into clear, compelling, audience-focused messaging
  • Collaborate with SEO strategists to optimize content for organic search while maintaining brand voice and clarity.
  • Develop and maintain clients' content brand guidelines or optimize existing guidelines.
  • Conduct client interviews and brand/industry research to support the development of client style guides and a Brandscript within the StoryBrand framework.
  • Develop and maintain editorial calendars in partnership with account and strategy teams
  • Support content audits and gap analyses to identify opportunities for content improvement or expansion
  • Conduct research (internal and external) to inform content topics, competitive positioning, and audience needs
  • Participate in client-facing calls to gather insights, clarify messaging needs, and align on content direction
  • Assist in shaping content strategies and messaging frameworks for client campaigns
  • Ensure content quality, consistency, and compliance with client brand guidelines
  • Perform efficient, high-level internal quality checks of other copywriters' work as a final step in the content creation process.

What You'll Work With
  • Google G Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides)
  • SEMRush or similar SEO tools
  • WordPress or similar CMS
  • Wrike (Project Management + Time Tracking)
  • SurferSEO
  • LLM's such as Chat GPT, Claude, and Gemini
  • Grammarly or similar editing tools

What We're Looking For
We're not just hiring a writer-we're hiring a growth-minded communicator, content marketing strategist, and creative problem-solver who brings ideas to life and thrives in complexity.
Growth-Oriented & Coachable
  • Eager to learn technical topics and new industries
  • Embraces feedback and continuous improvement
  • Proactively seeks better ways to tell a story
  • Comfortable working through ambiguity and uncertainty while staying action-oriented

Creative & Strategic
  • Can write for both engagement and conversion
  • Balances creativity with business objectives
  • Thinks beyond the headline to the audience journey

Organized & Adaptable
  • Manages multiple deadlines and projects with ease
  • Uses tools and systems to prioritize work
  • Adjusts tone and style for different audiences and formats

Collaborative & Client-Facing
  • Communicates clearly with internal and external stakeholders
  • Participates in brainstorming, strategy, and review sessions
  • Builds trust with clients through reliability and insight

Your Experience & Skills
Required:
  • 3-5 years of experience writing B2B marketing content, preferably in an agency or performance-driven environment
  • Portfolio showcasing long-form and short-form B2B writing (blogs, white papers, case studies, etc.)
  • Strong research, interviewing, and storytelling skills
  • Understanding of SEO writing principles
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, journalism, communications, or related field-or equivalent experience

Preferred:
  • Hands-on familiarity with StoryBrand
  • Experience writing for home services, manufacturing, technical, and/ or industrial sectors
  • Familiarity with buyer's journey, content mapping, and lead generation strategies
  • Experience collaborating with design, SEO, and paid media teams
