What Do Wireless Engineers Do?
Wireless engineers are responsible for the design, installation, and maintenance of mobile wireless networks. As a wireless engineer, your chief duties include coordinating with customers to determine what type of network is needed, what kind of budget they have, and any specific requirements or considerations for the project, such as security features or geographic limitations. You then design the system, make any adjustments based on customer feedback, and install it. You must be sure to integrate all software and hardware into the system correctly. After you install the network, you may be asked to train IT specialists or perform routine maintenance on the system.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Wireless Engineer, and why are they important?
What are some common challenges Wireless Engineers face when working on large-scale network deployments?
What is a Wireless Engineer?
What is the difference between Wireless Engineer vs Network Engineer?
| Aspect | Wireless Engineer | Network Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Certifications | FCC, Cisco CCNA Wireless, CWNA | CCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+ |
| Work Environment | Designing, installing, and maintaining wireless networks | Managing wired and wireless network infrastructure |
| Industry Usage | Telecommunications, enterprise Wi-Fi, IoT | IT, telecommunications, enterprise networks |
Wireless Engineers focus on wireless communication systems, including Wi-Fi and cellular networks, while Network Engineers manage overall network infrastructure, including wired and wireless components. Both roles require similar certifications and often work in overlapping industries, but Wireless Engineers specialize in wireless technologies and deployment.

Precise Systems is seeking a motivated and technically skilled Test & Evaluation Engineer / RF Engineer to support Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (CUAS) test and evaluation activities for Expeditionary Electromagnetic Warfare programs at NSWC Crane. The ideal candidate will have experience supporting RF test and evaluation, spectrum analysis, signal characterization, wireless communications testing, test planning, field testing, laboratory testing, and post-test data analysis. This role will support CUAS and EW system assessments in lab, field, over-the-air, and operationally relevant environments to evaluate system performance against unmanned system threats. This position requires an engineer who can apply RF engineering knowledge to test design, test execution, instrumentation setup, data collection, analysis, and reporting. The candidate should be comfortable working with engineers, test directors, range personnel, technicians, software developers, systems engineers, and Government stakeholders to ensure RF test events are technically sound, properly documented, and aligned to mission objectives.
This role requires in-person support.
Duties:
- Support RF test and evaluation activities for CUAS, EW systems, RF sensors, RF defeat capabilities, communication links, antennas, transmitters, receivers, and related test infrastructure.
- Assist in the planning, development, execution, analysis, and documentation of CUAS RF test events.
- Develop and support test objectives, test plans, test procedures, test cards, data collection plans, instrumentation plans, and post-test analysis products.
- Configure, operate, and troubleshoot RF test equipment, including spectrum analyzers, signal generators, oscilloscopes, receivers, software-defined radios, antennas, vector network analyzers, data acquisition systems, and related instrumentation.
- Collect, process, and analyze RF test data to evaluate system performance, signal behavior, link characteristics, receiver sensitivity, transmit power, waveform characteristics, interference, timing, and electromagnetic environment impacts.
- Support laboratory, hardware-in-the-loop, field, and over-the-air test events involving CUAS and EW systems.
- Evaluate RF system performance against defined test requirements, operational scenarios, and mission-relevant threat conditions.
- Support RF signal analysis and exploitation activities using test instrumentation, software tools, and approved analysis methods.
- Assess wireless communication protocols, RF control links, telemetry links, command links, and signal characteristics associated with unmanned systems and CUAS test environments.
- Support RF modeling and simulation activities, including RF coverage analysis, antenna placement assessment, propagation analysis, model validation, and correlation of test data to model predictions.
- Identify test limitations, data gaps, anomalies, instrumentation issues, equipment problems, and environmental factors that may affect test validity.
- Provide engineering recommendations to improve test rigor, test repeatability, RF measurement accuracy, data collection methods, and overall test efficiency.
- Support test setup, calibration verification, equipment configuration, test execution, teardown, and post-test equipment accountability.
- Coordinate with field test teams to ensure RF equipment, antennas, sensors, targets, vehicles, communication systems, and data collection tools are properly configured and ready for test execution.
- Support operation, setup, and maintenance of RF distribution systems, antennas, RF cables, amplifiers, spectrum analyzers, and other RF equipment used in lab and field test environments.
- Support evaluation of routine repairs, retrofits, system integrations, calibrations, test equipment operation, configuration, and adjustment of units under test.
- Participate in test readiness reviews, technical interchange meetings, Integrated Product Teams, daily test briefs, post-test debriefs, and lessons learned sessions.
- Develop and review RF analysis products, technical reports, test reports, engineering summaries, briefings, and recommendations for Government review.
- Ensure test data, technical documentation, and analysis products are properly marked, controlled, stored, and distributed in accordance with applicable security, CUI, OPSEC, and classification requirements.
Desired Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, Applied Physics, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Communications Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
Desired Experience:
- 3+ years of professional experience in RF, microwave, or electronic systems engineering.
- Experience supporting RF test and evaluation, spectrum analysis, signal analysis, wireless communications testing, EW systems, CUAS systems, or related technical test activities.
- Knowledge of RF fundamentals, including frequency, bandwidth, modulation, propagation, antennas, gain/loss, noise, interference, transmitters, receivers, link performance, and signal characterization.
- Experience using RF test and measurement equipment such as spectrum analyzers, signal generators, oscilloscopes, antennas, vector network analyzers, receivers, and software-defined radios.
- Ability to collect, process, analyze, and interpret RF test data.
- Understanding of test planning, test execution, data collection, test documentation, and post-test analysis.
- Ability to document technical findings, engineering assumptions, risks, limitations, and recommendations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with engineers, test personnel, technicians, program managers, Government leads, and cross-functional technical teams.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Active Secret clearance; Top Secret/SCI eligibility preferred.
- Experience supporting CUAS, electronic warfare, RF collection, RF defeat, tactical communications, unmanned systems, or countermeasure systems.
- Experience supporting NSWC Crane, NAVSEA, Marine Corps, Army, Navy, or other DoD test programs.
- Experience with software-defined radios, digital signal processing, RF modeling tools, MATLAB, Python, GNU Radio, LabVIEW, or other RF/signal analysis environments.
