About the Role
The Administrative Chief Resident is a one-year leadership appointment beginning July 1. In this role, you will provide program-level administrative support and help advance the residency program's mission to serve Howard University Hospital's communities and community partners. You will work alongside the Program Director, Associate Program Directors, medical faculty, residents, and the Program Administrator as a member of the residency leadership team, and you will represent the residents on the Chair's Senior Leadership Team. The position offers on-the-job development in administrative leadership, clinical teaching and supervision, research, and scholarly publication.
What You'll Do
Administration (approximately 45% of your time)
  • Support the Program Director with the residency program's day-to-day activities.
  • Help troubleshoot individual resident and programmatic issues as they arise.
  • Plan and run resident wellness events.
  • Assist in revising the Residency Manual and policies and procedures for the upcoming year.
  • Help run resident-only and resident/faculty meetings.
  • Supervise and organize resident rotation schedules, including resolving conflicts around clinical coverage.
  • Coordinate the weekly didactic schedule across residents, faculty, and guest lecturers.
  • Coordinate resident involvement in residency working groups and community activities.
  • Participate in required meetings, including the Clinical Competency Committee and the Program Evaluation Committee.
  • Help coordinate, plan, and implement community service and outreach projects.
  • Assist with the resident recruitment process.

Teaching & Supervision (approximately 25% of your time)
  • Work with faculty and administration to design and implement curricula and rotations.
  • Support junior residents through smooth transitions and the development of their clinical skills.
  • Provide medical care to HUH patients as a junior attending physician on the inpatient wards and while supervising residents in the Residents' Clinic.
  • Deliver presentations at didactics for medical students and residents.
  • Participate in faculty development activities.
  • Serve as a role model and guide for fellow residents in their professional interactions with patients, families, staff, and colleagues.

Scholarship & Research (approximately 25% of your time)
  • Help lead residents in quality improvement (QI) projects.
  • Work on scholarly projects tailored to your individual interests and goals.
  • Assist with quality and safety programs to build expertise in systems-based practice and process improvement.
  • Participate in scholarly activities, which may include research division involvement, QI projects, and health policy work.
  • Mentor scholarly projects for local, regional, or national conferences as opportunities arise.

Required Qualifications
  • MD degree.
  • Completion of training at an ACGME-accredited residency program, in good academic standing by June 30, 2026.
  • Graduate of an Internal Medicine residency program.
  • Board certified or board eligible.
  • Not currently engaged in a Match agreement with another program through the 2026 Match cycle.
  • Eligible for a District of Columbia medical license and eligible to take board exams.
  • Current ACLS and BLS certification.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with excellent command of English.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with administration, staff, peers, and full-time and community-based faculty across complex interdisciplinary and inter-professional settings.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Ability to collect and manage data to track performance outcomes and ensure comparable educational experiences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the education of residents and medical students, with the ability to apply educational and evaluation methods.
  • Strong collaboration, team-building, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Ability to prioritize work with the Program Director, Department Chair, and staff.
  • Strong general computer and organizational skills.
  • Willingness and ability to adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University and its clinical partners.
