Job Summary:

Responsibilities:
• Provides advanced Linux and UNIX system administration services in an Enterprise environment.
• Providing technical support and hardware and software expertise for Linux and UNIX systems to ensure that they operate accurately and efficiently in response to user requirements.
• Assignments shall include such diverse tasks as installing Red Hat Linux, Solaris, and HP-UX operating systems and applications, jumpstart, JET and HP Ignite and Kick Start server installation and support, native and 3rd party advanced file system configurations and management, storage subsystems and storage area network management, diagnosing and resolving system problems, testing software, scripting, documenting operating procedures, and providing general system administration support.
• Installation, maintenance, and support of software (identified by the government) both freeware and vendor supplied.
• Records problem symptoms (government provided pre-defined log).
• Provides resolutions for hardware and software problems.
• Provides Linux and UNIX systems support in an enterprise production 24x7 environments, with rotating on-call duties. This includes work on nights and weekends to provide operations support and accommodate customer needs for off-hours maintenance completion.
• Analyzes root causes.
• Refers other problems (e.g. networking) to the appropriate organizations
• Coordinates/schedules remedial actions (e.g. disk swapping, backups, maintenance fixes, patching, etc.) with vendor and/or operations personnel.
• Tracks and documents status of all problems within the environment, through resolution.
• Selectively monitors standard daily operations.
• Documents special procedures required for continuous operations of systems.
• Documents procedures for automated system build utility operations, backup and recovery of files and disk management utilities.
• Reviews monitoring logs for problem identification and suggested resolutions.
• Maintains statistical information to help track persistent problems using pre-defined log.
• Installs and configures new hardware components for operations in a Data Center networked environment.
• Interfaces with customers as necessary to support their operational environment.
• Schedules vendor maintenance and services activities.
• Documents security procedures, on an as needed basis, according to security policy and guidelines.
• Monitors/reports on unauthorized access attempts.
• Monitors security logs to determine security problems.
• Identifies and remediates security vulnerabilities.
• Tracks system utilization, daily, to determine if problems are imminent.
• Monitors and provides daily reports on system performance to pinpoint performance bottlenecks.
• Provides technical input to evaluation of alternative methods.
• Develops and maintains detailed and accurate documentation as requested by Branch Chief, team lead and/or CTR. Documentation may be required for operational procedures, troubleshooting aids, and technical analyses for products, features, and capabilities.
• Ensures all changes are logged through the use of listserv archive lists, and division, branch, and team change management procedures.
• Uses CIT and HSB service management tools, which include Service Now for work request ticket management to respond to and document work efforts requested by customers.
Qualifications:
Required:
• A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in computer science, information science, engineering, or related subject plus 6 years of experience; 4 years of experience with a Master’s degree.
• At least five years of experience in an enterprise production environment as a computer professional maintaining, configuring, installing, and supporting Red Hat Linux and UNIX servers and resources.
• At least three years of experience must involve the enterprise system administration of Red Hat Linux.
• RedHat SA certified is a Plus.
• Excellent project management skills in order to plan for hardware upgrades and migrations from Solaris and/or HP-UX environment to RedHat Linux.
• Excellent problem management and troubleshooting skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to be able to ascertain user requirements and prepare documentation.
• Ability to work cooperatively and to function well in a team environment.
• Excellent customer interface skills.
• Ability to support UNIX systems in a production 24x7 environment, with rotating on-call duties.
• US Citizenship or permanent residence status.
• Must pass a US government ‘Public Trust’ clearance.
Preferred:
• Additional experience in AIX and HP-UX system administration is a plus.
