Job description

Overview
Nakupuna Prime is looking for a Data Center Mainframe Operator to serve as part of the U.S. Army Human Resources Command (HRC) data center operations team, ensuring the availability, integrity, and security of enterprise mainframe computing resources. This role supports mission-critical systems used for personnel, logistics, warfighter readiness, and command-and-control functions.
This position is designated as a floater, meaning the operator will primarily work the 1100-1900 shift but must be able to flex across all shifts (1st, 2nd, and 3rd) to maintain 24x7 coverage. Reliability, adaptability, and strict adherence to DoD standards are essential.
Responsibilities
The following reflects management's definition of essential functions for this job but does not restrict the tasks that may be assigned.
  • Operate mainframe systems in a secure DoD environment, ensuring continuous system availability.
  • Monitor system consoles, JES queues, and automated operations tools to maintain stable production processing.
  • Execute batch job scheduling, restarts, reruns, and failure resolution following approved JCL and operational procedures.
  • Perform IPLs, system startups, shutdowns, and recovery actions in accordance with TMs, SOPs, and established protocols.
  • Manage DASD, tape libraries, printers, and other peripheral devices.
  • Respond to system alerts and incidents; perform first-level troubleshooting and escalate per incident management procedures.
  • Maintain accurate logs, shift documentation, and audit-ready records supporting cybersecurity and configuration management requirements.
  • Support COOP and Disaster Recovery exercises and real-world events.
  • Enforce access controls, data handling rules, and OPSEC/IA requirements.
  • Coordinate with government, military, and contractor personnel to ensure mission success.

Qualifications
Skills/Qualifications:
  • Must pass initial and recurring background investigations.
  • Must comply with all DoD physical security, cybersecurity, and OPSEC requirements.
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience operating enterprise mainframe systems in a production environment.
  • Equivalent education or certifications may be considered in place of experience.
  • Familiarity with batch scheduling tools and mainframe operational workflows.
  • Experience supporting DoD, classified, or highly regulated environments.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays when mission needs require.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience supporting DoD, DISA, or service-specific environments (Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force).
  • Knowledge of ITIL-based incident, problem, and change management processes.
  • Experience with mainframe automation, monitoring, and console management tools.
  • Familiarity with DoD RMF processes and cybersecurity controls.

Clearance Requirements: This position requires a current Secret clearance. Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Physical Requirements: The ideal candidate must at a minimum be able to meet the following physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation:
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions with the hands, wrists, and fingers.
  • Ability to engage in and follow audible communications in emergency situations.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods at a desk and working on a computer.
