Weekend Engineers usually work during non-traditional hours, often covering shifts on Saturdays and Sundays to provide critical support or maintenance when regular staff are off. This role often involves troubleshooting urgent issues, performing preventative maintenance, and ensuring system uptime with minimal supervision. Collaboration is still key; Weekend Engineers regularly communicate with weekday teams to ensure seamless project handoffs and accurate reporting. Flexibility, self-motivation, and the ability to quickly adapt to unexpected challenges are important for success in this position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering fundamentals, troubleshooting, and relevant technical qualifications such as a degree or certification in your engineering discipline. Familiarity with industry-specific tools, maintenance management systems, and diagnostic equipment is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to work independently under time constraints are essential soft skills. These abilities ensure efficient operations, rapid response to issues, and minimal downtime during critical weekend shifts.

What are Weekend Engineers?

Weekend Engineers are professionals who typically work engineering shifts during weekends, rather than standard weekday hours. They may be responsible for maintaining, repairing, or monitoring systems, equipment, or facilities to ensure continuous operation during off-peak times. Weekend Engineers are often employed in industries that require 24/7 coverage, such as manufacturing, IT, utilities, or facilities management. Their role is crucial for addressing urgent issues, performing preventative maintenance, and supporting operations when regular staff are not available.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High-paying engineering positions often require advanced degrees, professional certifications, and work in high-demand industries or executive-level positions.

What Does a Weekend Engineer Do?

A weekend engineer works part-time (usually on weekends and evening hours) to service equipment for various companies that they use in their operations. In addition to weekend shifts, some positions also require you to have on-call hours available on a rotating schedule with other engineers. Your responsibilities vary depending on the job and the company for which you work. For an IT company, you may service computer equipment, internet lines, and other technical equipment. In a factory position, you may work on production line equipment, such as conducting routine inspections and maintenance on equipment, ordering parts for replacement, and repairing broken or worn-down equipment.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering with extensive experience and advanced skills can earn $500,000 or more annually. High compensation often involves leadership roles, bonuses, stock options, or working in high-demand industries with complex projects.

Can you make $250,000 as an engineer?

Job description

About Us
Weekend is the leading developer of voice AI games for smart TVs. Our games attract millions of users every month, with family favorites like Jeopardy!, Song Quiz, CoComelon: Sing and Play with JJ, and Wheel of Fortune.
We believe voice interfaces will become the main way people access entertainment in their living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, and cars. We're building a bundled subscription product similar to Netflix or Spotify for the emerging category of "AI-powered games."
Weekend was founded by Max Child and James Wilsterman in 2024. The founders went through Y Combinator in 2018 and landed a spot on the 2022 YC Top Companies List. We're a quickly-growing team headquartered in Union Square, San Francisco.
Role Summary
Weekend is seeking a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to ensure the stability, security, and scalability of our infrastructure as our AI gaming platform grows. You'll own our Kubernetes cluster, lead security improvements, drive infrastructure automation and best practices, administer AWS accounts, and serve as the primary infrastructure partner for our software engineering teams. This is a foundational role - you'll directly enable Weekend's game teams to move fast without compromising reliability.
This job opportunity offers a hybrid work arrangement, and we are specifically seeking candidates who are comfortable with on-site attendance in our Bay Area office 3 times per week and are either currently residing in or near the Bay Area or willing to relocate for on-site work.
What You'll Do at Weekend
  • Manage and ensure the stability of Weekend's Kubernetes cluster (EKS)
  • Audit and enhance our infrastructure security posture, including secrets management and secure-by-default design
  • Lead the adoption of infrastructure best practices through automation and internal education
  • Administer Weekend's AWS account(s), including IAM, networking, cost management, and cloud resource governance across all environments
  • Empower software engineers to manage their own infrastructure through self-service tooling and robust documentation
  • Pair with software engineers to solve their day-to-day infrastructure problems
  • Define a proactive security strategy that bakes best practices into the developer workflow
  • Develop an infrastructure strategy for our AI initiative
We're Excited About You Because You Have:
  • 6+ years of experience in infrastructure, SRE, DevOps, or cloud engineering roles
  • Proven experience administering large numbers of remote machines (Kubernetes, ECS, Terraform, Ansible)
  • Experience building developer-facing platforms or internal tools that make engineering teams more productive
  • Strong security fundamentals: secrets management, threat modeling, and secure-by-default design
  • Experience managing build automation (Travis, Jenkins, CircleCI, GitHub Actions)
  • A track record of operating in fast-moving environments with rapid product iteration
  • High ownership mentality - you treat infrastructure problems as your problems to solve
  • Deep user empathy - you build for the developers who depend on your systems
Bonus Points:
  • Experience with modern NodeJS, JVM, or similar modern runtimes
  • Background working on large-scale gaming or consumer platforms
  • Experience with observability tooling (e.g., DataDog)
Our Stack
  • AWS
  • Kubernetes on EKS
  • GitOps (FluxCD)
  • Terraform
  • AWS GameLift Streams
  • GitHub Actions
  • DataDog
  • TypeScript/NodeJS
  • React
  • Unity
The Hiring Process
  • Stage 1 (Recruiter Screen): 30-minute call with a member of our recruiting team
  • Stage 2 (Manager Screen + Technical Round): 45 minute call with the hiring manager and a 60min live technical session with the engineering team
  • Stage 3 (Onsite): Panel interviews with various team members
  • Stage 4 (Founders Chat): Conversation with our founders

As an AI company, we're a huge believer in the value of AI tools. That being said, the interview process is intended as a conversation - we want to get to know you and your experience. Please refrain from using AI tools during all Weekend interviews unless otherwise specified.
What's in it for You
