Job description

Overview
HarperChristian Resources (HCR) is looking for an Editor to join our dynamic team. HCR creates original Bible study content and Bible study resources based on book content published by Thomas Nelson and Zondervan, as well as other Christian trade book publishers. We publish video Bible studies, Bible study guides, small group study guides, ministry programs, and church campaigns in both print and digital formats.
In this position, you will work closely with the acquisitions editors and managing editors to copyedit final manuscripts of front-list titles. You will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects and be responsible for keeping Bible studies on track as they move through the production process.
The ideal candidate will be an organized, detail-oriented individual with strong editorial skills, an ability to discern when content might be confusing or repetitive for readers, and the skills to rewrite or phrase context to fix the problems. The candidate will also be an avid book reader and Bible study user who shares HarperChristian Resources' mission to equip people to understand the Scriptures, cultivate spiritual growth, and live an inspired faith with Bible study and video resources from today's most trusted voices.
Our preference is to fill this position in Nashville, TN or Grand Rapids, MI but we are also open to qualified candidates that are located outside of these areas. Travel may be required based on the need of the business.
Responsibilities
  • Handles the production editorial process in coordination with the acquisitions editors and managing editor from manuscript to final files for 24+ front-list titles a year, utilizing electronic workflow.
  • Works closely with the acquisition editors and assesses manuscripts for copyediting and the styling of all design elements, using proprietary Microsoft Word styles for design and composition.
  • Coordinates with the design teams and freelance editors, collates corrections from freelancers and authors, verifies that corrections have been made, and ensures timely delivery of final files to the printer.
  • Develops excellent working relationships with colleagues, including acquisitions editors, marketing staff, production staff, designers, typesetters, and freelancers.
  • Works with authors and agents to secure permissions, releases, and endorsements, as needed.
  • Assists with various editions of assigned projects, including special editions, international editions, trade paper conversions, and derivative products.
  • Copyedits flap and cover copy and helps proofread and check all stages of jacket/cover proofs as needed.
  • Assists with updating reprint corrections as needed.
  • Attends and contributes to production and other related meetings.

Qualifications

  • Editing experience, including substantive editing, editorial project management, and speaking into aesthetics and design.
  • Personal experience in leading or participating in a small group and/or Bible study, preferred.
  • Good understanding of the Bible and Christian doctrine, preferred.
  • Understanding the role of the church and ministry for publishing Bible study resources, preferred.

Work Experience: Minimum 3 years' editorial experience, preferably in trade book publishing.
Education: Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or related field. Other majors are welcome when combined with relevant experience.
Industry Knowledge: Keeps up with trends in the publishing industry by reading trade magazines, such as Publisher's Weekly preferred; working knowledge of popular Christian books and authors a plus.
Skills:
  • Solid copyediting and proofreading skills; knowledge of industry standards.
  • Must have the ability to shepherd multiple projects while maintaining high standards of quality and hitting deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a personal drive for excellence.
  • Strategic and always able to understand the bigger picture.
