The main difference between a Web Developer Manager and a Web Developer is that the manager oversees development teams, manages projects, and handles strategic planning, while the Web Developer focuses on coding and building websites. The manager role requires leadership experience and often involves higher-level responsibilities, whereas the developer role emphasizes technical skills and hands-on development work.

How does a Web Developer Manager typically balance hands-on coding with leadership responsibilities?

As a Web Developer Manager, you are often required to strike a balance between leading your team and participating in technical work. While your primary focus will be on managing projects, mentoring team members, and coordinating with stakeholders, many organizations expect you to stay technically involved—such as guiding architectural decisions or reviewing code. The balance can vary depending on the company's size and structure, but effective Web Developer Managers allocate time for both strategic leadership and hands-on technical tasks to maintain credibility and ensure project success.

What does a web development manager do?

A web development manager oversees the planning, coordination, and execution of web projects, leading development teams to ensure timely delivery and quality. They manage project timelines, allocate resources, and collaborate with designers, developers, and stakeholders to meet business goals, often using tools like project management software and coding standards. Strong leadership, technical knowledge, and communication skills are essential for success in this role.

What is a Web Developer Manager?

A Web Developer Manager is a professional responsible for leading and managing a team of web developers. They oversee the planning, development, and maintenance of websites or web applications, ensuring projects are completed on time and meet quality standards. In addition to technical expertise, they coordinate project tasks, mentor team members, and serve as a liaison between developers and other stakeholders. Their role often includes setting development standards, implementing best practices, and staying updated with the latest web technologies.

Is AI replacing web devs?

Web Developer Managers oversee web development teams and projects, and while AI tools can automate certain coding tasks and improve efficiency, they are not replacing web developers entirely. Instead, AI is seen as a complement that enhances productivity, requiring developers to focus on complex problem-solving, design, and project management skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Web Developer Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Developer Manager, you need a strong background in web development, team leadership experience, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), web frameworks (such as React or Angular), and version control systems (like Git) is typically required. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and mentorship abilities help you guide your team and foster collaboration. These skills ensure that development projects are delivered efficiently, meet business goals, and encourage a productive and motivated team environment.

Is being a BDM a stressful job?

A Business Development Manager (BDM) role can be stressful due to targets, client negotiations, and workload management. The level of stress varies based on industry, company culture, and individual skills in sales and relationship building.

Job description

Job Summary
Hive Group is an award-winning small business specializing in acquisition, financial, and program management, as well as business intelligence support for the federal government. We are seeking a Mid-Level Web Developer to join our team supporting the General Services Administration (GSA) Assisted Acquisition Services (AAS).
In this role, you will collaborate with data and engineering teams to lead UI/UX initiatives and support a suite of internal applications, dashboards, and workflow tools. You will lead defined work streams and specialized functional responsibilities, delivering complex work with a high degree of independence while contributing materially to delivery outcomes across engagements. Success requires the ability to engage directly with clients and stakeholders to understand user needs and solve complex problems while maintaining rigorous development fundamentals, including clear documentation, Section 508 compliance, and high-quality code. You will partner with senior engineers, product owners, and BI/Data teams to translate system designs into polished, maintainable front-end experiences that drive a consistent, governed, and reusable UI/UX pattern across the portfolio.
This is a HYBRID position with on-sight, in office requirements at our Hive Group Headquarters in McLean VA.
Key Responsibilities
  • Build, maintain, and enhance front-end interfaces and web applications across the AAS portfolio of internal tools, dashboards, and automation solutions.
  • Lead UI/UX design and improvement work across the portfolio, including interface refinement, usability iteration, and consistency with portfolio-wide design standards.
  • Implement and uphold accessibility (Section 508) and secure coding practices, including version control, proper PII handling, environment variable management, and meaningful logging.
  • Debug production issues with urgency and discipline, balancing immediate user impact with long-term root-cause analysis.
  • Contribute to version-controlled workflows, participate in peer code reviews, follow structured deployment practices, and maintain comprehensive user and developer documentation.
  • Communicate with contract and portfolio technical leadership on cross-contract deployments to ensure design and delivery decisions align with portfolio standards.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience building and maintaining web-based applications or front-end interfaces.
  • Strong fundamentals in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSON, and REST APIs.
  • Proficiency with Git/version control workflows and development tools such as Visual Studio Code and Google Apps Script.
  • Proven ability to write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code and to resolve production issues through structured problem-solving.
  • Familiarity with Section 508 accessibility standards and secure coding practices (PII handling, environment variables, and logging).
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to ask clarifying questions, proactively raise concerns, and incorporate feedback from stakeholders.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a GSA Public Trust Clearance.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Google Apps Script environments (Web Apps, Libraries, APIs, Add-ons), Google API services (e.g., Charts, Picker), and CLASP.
  • Familiarity with modular code structure, separation of concerns, and front-end performance optimization.
  • Basic SQL knowledge and working proficiency in Python.
  • Familiarity with browser storage (e.g., IndexedDB), third-party JavaScript library integration, and general web security best practices.
  • Comfort leveraging AI-assisted development tools to accelerate iteration while maintaining human-in-the-loop quality and security reviews.
  • Understanding of federal acquisition processes or government data systems.
Compensation and Benefits
The estimated compensation range for this position is between $80,000 and $100,000 annually, based on benchmarks in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. This range reflects a good faith estimate for all experience levels. At Hive Group, salary decisions are influenced by several factors, including but not limited to the role, location, and the combination of education, training, skills, certifications, competencies, and relevant work experience.
