What is a web accessibility tester?

A Web Accessibility Tester evaluates websites and digital content to ensure they meet accessibility standards, such as WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). They identify barriers that may prevent users with disabilities from accessing online content and provide recommendations for improvements. This role involves using assistive technologies, automated testing tools, and manual checks to verify compliance. Web Accessibility Testers collaborate with developers, designers, and stakeholders to create inclusive digital experiences.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a web accessibility tester?

Web Accessibility Testers typically spend their day reviewing websites and digital content to ensure compliance with accessibility standards such as WCAG. This involves both manual testing—using assistive technologies like screen readers—and automated tools to identify barriers for users with disabilities. They document their findings, provide actionable feedback to development teams, and may participate in meetings to clarify accessibility requirements or suggest improvements. Collaboration with designers, developers, and project managers is common, making communication a key part of the role. This daily work directly contributes to more accessible and user-friendly digital experiences for all individuals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web accessibility tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Accessibility Tester, you need a solid understanding of accessibility standards (such as WCAG), experience with web development basics (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), and knowledge of assistive technologies. Familiarity with tools like screen readers (e.g., JAWS, NVDA), automated testing platforms, and relevant certifications (such as IAAP CPACC) is highly beneficial. Excellent attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills are important soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are essential to accurately identify accessibility issues, communicate findings, and help create inclusive digital experiences.

How to become a web accessibility tester?

To become a web accessibility tester, develop knowledge of accessibility standards such as WCAG and Section 508, and gain experience with assistive technologies like screen readers. Learning testing tools like JAWS, NVDA, or Axe, and obtaining certifications such as the IAAP Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC) can enhance your qualifications. Strong attention to detail and understanding of web development are also beneficial.

What is web accessibility testing?

Collaboration & Coordination (15%)
  • Partner with web, graphic design, marketing, GIS, civic analytics, and planning teams to scope and deliver digital products
  • Coordinate with project managers, designers, and technical staff on requirements and delivery
  • Support deployment, hosting, and environment coordination alongside Alta's Web and Digital Studio Lead and IT

Peer Review, Testing & QA/QC (10%)
  • Review code and products for functionality, responsiveness, browser/device compatibility, accessibility, data accuracy, and security
  • Provide peer review and informal mentorship to other developers
