Vice President of Engineering

We are seeking a VP of Engineering in either New York Metro/East Coast or London to join Convene Hospitality Group's Technology organization. The right candidate will own the technical architecture and long-term engineering direction of the products we build internally. This role is hands-on, deeply technical, and focused on ensuring that what we build is well-architected, scalable, maintainable, and cost-effective.

You will own the architecture and engineering direction across application and data platforms, driving build vs. buy decisions, setting standards, and mentoring engineers and their managers. You will collaborate with senior leadership to bridge technical execution with business strategy, championing AI and emerging technologies that drive measurable impact, and translating technical investments into business outcomes.

This is an ideal role for a senior technologist who still enjoys building, designing, and staying close to the code while also shaping engineering standards, tooling, and decision-making at the organizational level.ย ย

What You'll Do:

Own Enterprise-Level Technical Strategy & Architecture

  • Design and evolve architectures for complex, multi-system application and data platforms
  • Ensure systems are scalable, secure, observable, and maintainable over time
  • Identify and proactively address architectural risks and productize technical debt into tangible engineering outcomes

Drive build vs. license decision-making

  • Estimate engineering cost, complexity, and long-term maintenance implications
  • Evaluate third-party platforms, frameworks, and services with a pragmatic ROI lens
  • Provide clear technical recommendations to business and executive stakeholders
  • Maintain deep fluency in the evolving AI and technology landscape to inform decision making

Be hands-on with technology

  • Actively contribute to codebase, architecture, technical designs, code reviews, and proofs of concept
  • Set standards for APIs, data models, infrastructure, and deployment patterns
  • Work closely with cross-functional partners to ensure technical decisions align with company-wide impact and foster trust across functions

Mentor and elevate the engineering organization

  • Set clear expectations on standards and process, allowing the team to do its best work
  • Coach engineers across experience levels on system design, tradeoffs, and best practices
  • Build a strong leadership pipeline, supporting the development of our engineering team
  • Create and own a team culture that rewards solutions-minded thinking and holds the team accountable to an inclusive, growth-oriented environment

Leverage new technology to increase engineering efficiency and effectiveness

  • Actively use and champion AI and emerging technologies to accelerate development, improve code and data quality, and elevate system design
  • Identify opportunities to embed new technologies into internal workflows and platforms
  • Establish best practices for responsible, effective usage of new technologies across engineering

Shape long-term technical strategy

  • Establish architectural principles and guardrails that drive operational excellence, empowering teams to make autonomous decisions while maintaining rigorous standards
  • Unify systems across teams to ensure seamless interoperability, creating a flexible architecture that can adapt to changing market dynamics and business needs
  • Strategically balance speed of delivery with long-term sustainability
  • Establish data architecture standards that ensure clean and consistent data across systems

What We Look For:

  • 10+ years of experience designing and building production software systems
  • Deep experience with modern system architecture (distributed systems, APIs, data platforms, cloud infrastructure)
  • Mastery of JavaScript, Node.js, React, and frameworks such as Express.js and Next.js
  • Proven experience designing and operating modern data platforms, including pipeline architecture, data transformation frameworks (dbt), and data warehousing (Snowflake, Redshift) with excellence in data quality, modeling standards, democratization, and governance at scale
  • Extensive background automating CI/CD pipelines and automating testing, deployment, validation, and rollback
  • Proven experience evaluating, incorporating, and managing technical vendorsย
  • Proven ability to evaluate and estimate engineering effort for large initiatives
  • Strong background mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction
  • Hands-on experience using leading-edge technologies to improve developer experience and optimize software development workflows
  • Experience setting technical standards, guidelines, and architectural patterns across teams
  • Experience leading and developing engineering managers
