Job description

This position will be located on site at our Jersey City, NJ office location.

The AmTrust Financial Services (AFS) Accounting team is recruiting for a lead VP of its North American Property and Casualty and North American Specialty Risk segments. The North American controller is responsible for the oversight and management of multiple accounting teams making up 20 property and casualty and Title insurance carriers as well as the U.S. management company and various fee entities. Responsibilities include managing the financial close process, supporting transformative automation initiatives and new business activities/reporting requirements. The position will work closely with various North American controllers, the US Domestic Insurance Accounting, Specialty Risk Accounting and Reinsurance Accounting teams and reports directly to the SVP – Global Controller & Chief Accounting Officer. 


1. Manage the financial close process for assigned areas, ensuring results are complete, accurate, timely and in compliance with U.S. GAAP, U.S. statutory and IFRS 17 accounting guidance.

2. Analysis of key data and performance metrics to provide thoughtful analysis of results and action plans in alignment with the company mission and execution of goals.

3. Lead day-to-day management of assigned accounting teams and development of accounting staff, to ensure appropriate coverage, recruitment of talent and retention.

4. Support adherence to the company's framework of internal controls, including the design and execution of key controls and attesting to control effectiveness.

5. Exhibit strong leadership and maintain effective and collaborative communication with assigned accounting/finance teams, business units, executive and front office. Develop and mentor direct reports to ensure knowledge sharing and professional growth.

6. Drive continuous improvement by reassessing day-to-day resource needs, process efficiencies and automation opportunities for potential enhancements.

7. Support corporate-wide finance transformation and automation initiatives for respective areas, in order to meet operational and corporate objectives.

8. Lead special project work, which may require critical and abstract thinking, as well as knowledge of insurance accounting, data and IT Systems, and performance of forensic accounting type tasks.

9. Provide management with ad hoc analysis, assessment of critical accounting issues and application of creative solutions to operational issues.

10. Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external auditors.


Required:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, U.S. STAT and IFRS 17 accounting principles
  • Ability to assess and understand systems and processes, and recommend/implement improvements
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Must be flexible and have demonstrated skills to work effectively in a team-oriented environment
  • Strong initiative, problem solving, and interpersonal skills, plus an orientation toward continuous improvement are required
  • Intermediate or higher excel skills
  • Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning Software (Oracle) and Hyperion (HFM) preferred

Experience:

  • 15+ years of accounting with insurance industry experience (experience in warranty insurance products preferred).
  • Must have strong track record in leadership roles, as well as people management, controllership, and project management experience.
  • Extensive experience/knowledge of financial close processes and systems.
  • B.S. Accountancy or higher
  • CPA required
  • “Big 4” experience preferred

The expected salary range for this role is $275,000 - 300,000.
