Description
Be part of an organization dedicated to improving our community through programs that provide equal access to legal services. The Justice & Diversity Center of The Bar Association of San Francisco (JDC of BASF) has a strong commitment to employee work-life balance and provides a stimulating work environment. JDC currently has an exciting opportunity for a Volunteer and Legal Clinics Coordinator to be part of the team!
The Volunteer and Legal Clinics Coordinator is responsible for activities related to recruiting and retaining volunteers, as well as coordinating monthly community legal clinics (4 at this time, with one of the four monthly legal clinics occurring on the fourth Friday of the month with hours being roughly from 12 pm - 7:30 pm that day) and providing support for a variety of legal aid programs. The Coordinator is an integral member of the JDC staff and works in conjunction with the Pro Bono Manager to formulate and implement JDC's volunteer recruitment and retention plan, including producing the annual volunteer appreciation party. The position works with JDC staff to develop volunteer opportunities and recruitment efforts in response to community needs and volunteer requests.
Job Duties:

The Coordinator works under the supervision of JDC's Pro Bono Manager as described below.
  • Recruit and retain volunteers: plan volunteer trainings and appreciation events, maintain volunteer databases and email listservs.
  • Monitor inbox: screen and respond promptly to attorneys, firms, interpreters, paralegals, students and others interested in volunteering or obtaining JDC services.
  • Collaborate with the Communications team to create social media posts, outreach flyers and brochures and brief articles for newspapers and newsletters as part of social media campaigns.
  • Generate database reports for grant reporting and recruiting purposes.
  • Coordinate one-time volunteer opportunities: create timelines and instructions and organize event.
  • The Coordinator may be assigned to other responsibilities as they arise, including community outreach and events management.

The Coordinator will also work under the direction of the Director of Pro Bono Legal Services to coordinate community legal clinics which involves:
  • Recruiting volunteer interpreters, attorneys, and intake interviewers.
  • Collaborating with JDC partners to secure facility agreements and support.
  • Creating, updating, and preparing materials for clinic facilitation.
  • Generating client flyers and recruitment flyers for clinics via
  • Inputting client information post clinic into JDC's database.

Please Note: One of our 3 monthly Legal Clinics occurs on the third Saturday of each month. The Coordinator will be present at the clinic from 8:00 am - 2:00 pm on these Saturdays and, during the weeks when this Saturday clinic occurs, will not work on the Friday prior to the clinic or the Monday following the clinic. The Coordinator is the main facilitator for all clinics, and will be required to travel to the 3 clinic locations in San Francisco. The clinic schedule is subject to change.
Working Environment:
Responsibilities will predominantly be performed at BASF's office located in downtown San Francisco, during normal business hours, which are Monday through Friday, from 9:00am to 5:00pm. This position also requires heavy telephone, computer and webcast use. This position also requires Coordinator to be available outside of average (9 - 5 pm) work hours, for clinics and special events. Coordinator is also expected to travel (small scale) to various clinic locations on a monthly basis.
Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree, or an equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and expertise sufficient to perform the essential duties of the position

Experience Requirements:
  • Experience working with low-income communities preferred
  • Experience working with a legal services or social services organization preferred
  • Experience coordinating events + project development a plus
  • Experience in customer service or client communication a plus

Skills Requirements:
  • Fluency in English and Spanish (written and oral)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proactive with strong interpersonal skills and ability to be flexible and to prioritize tasks.
  • Strong ability to organize, prioritize and multi-task with high attention to detail
  • Motivated, creative and independent, while also able to work in a team-oriented environment
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel,)
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and working with low-income communities is preferred
