Job description

General Summary:
Velocity is seeking a VoIP Engineer with a strong background in analog voice and Voice-over-IP to join our Network Operations team. The ideal candidate will assist Velocity in delivering a superior customer experience. This position does not have any direct reports. The incumbent will be responsible for implementing and operating Velocity’s VoIP and telephony services.
Velocity, A Managed Solutions Company, operates many diverse and vendor agnostic platforms nationally. The incumbent in this role will be responsible for quickly understanding and operating on these platforms, using existing documentation and independent discovery of the environments, as needed.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a primary escalation contact for Voice Network Operations Center (VNOC)
  • Operate Asterisk PBX, call management systems, and IVRs located in diverse geographic regions
  • Provide expertise in VoIP-based technologies primarily focused on delivering carrier services to hospitality and retail environments
  • Perform design work that incorporates industry best practices for hospitality and enterprise customers
  • Function as a technical lead for projects requiring VoIP technologies
  • Coordinate proper installation, configuration, and testing of VoIP components
  • Create and maintain documentation to support the implementation and management of VoIP technologies
  • Collaborate with engineering function to ensure that designs are in line with the needs of the current and future requirements from our customers, network platforms, and security compliance
  • Engage and manage external vendors as appropriate to enhance the team’s capabilities
  • Other duties and responsibilities, as assigned
  • This position participates in an on-call rotation and may provide support off hours as required
  • This position may require up to 20% travel
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • 2+ years’ experience implementing, troubleshooting, and maintaining VoIP systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge with telephone networks – POTS and VoIP
  • Demonstrated knowledge with telephony standards and protocols – H.323, MGCP, ISDN, SIP, RTP
  • Demonstrated knowledge with IP networks and troubleshooting (VoIP, NAT Traversal, STUN, etc.)
  • Demonstrated knowledge programming and scripting (BASH / Python / JavaScript / PHP)
  • Demonstrated knowledge working in Linux-based open-source environments and platforms
  • Strong technical, leadership, and communication skills
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead complex projects in a cross functional team environment
  • Demonstrate the ability to articulate ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to independently lift and carry 35 lbs.
  • Ability to hear ordinary conversations and phone communications
Qualifications, Experience and Education:
  • Required — Bachelor’s degree in technology or equivalent experience (5-years)
  • Required — Experience with Asterisk-based PBX installations
  • Preferred — Experience in hospitality or service provider networks
  • Preferred — Industry relevant training and certifications — CCNA, CCNP, dCAA, dCAP, etc.
