About the Role
The VoiP Engineeris a hands-on technical role responsible for supporting voice systems, network infrastructure, and physical connectivity across Challenger campuses and corporate offices.
This role combines telecommunications support, basic networking, infrastructure installation, and help desk responsibilities. Work is performed both at a desk and onsite in classrooms, wiring closets, and equipment rooms.
This position is best suited for an IT professional who values clear standards, documentation, accountability, and practical problem-solving in real-world environments.
Key Responsibilities
Telecommunications Systems
  • Support and maintain IP-PBX and digital phone systems
  • Troubleshoot VoIP, SIP, and analog (FXO/FXS) systems
  • Perform adds, moves, and changes
  • Troubleshoot carrier services (POTS, SIP, business voice)
  • Apply updates and patches to telecom systems
  • Work with carriers and vendors to resolve service issues
  • Support mobile device provisioning and management

Network & Data Communications
  • Execute switch and router configuration changes using SOPs
  • Install and configure network equipment
  • Collect diagnostics and assist with troubleshooting
  • Work with OEM support for break/fix issues
  • Apply updates and patches to network systems

Infrastructure & Cabling
  • Install and maintain structured cabling (voice and data)
  • Perform wire termination and cable testing
  • Install and manage MDF, IDF, and MPOE environments
  • Install racks, cable management systems, and related hardware
  • Support infrastructure projects, upgrades, and carrier transitions
  • Work with contractors and service providers
  • Create and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs)
    General Equipment Support
    • Install and replace IT equipment (servers, UPS, desktops, peripherals)
    • Follow established deployment and configuration standards

    Help Desk Support
    • Provide Tier 1-2 support for assigned systems and services
    • Troubleshoot issues via phone, remote tools, and ticketing systems
    • Support users across multiple campuses and remote locations
    • Document issues and resolutions clearly

    Travel & Schedule Expectations
    • Travel to Challenger locations in Utah, California, Nevada, Idaho, and Texas
    • Approximately 2-3 months of travel per year, with heavier travel during summer
    • Mileage and per diem reimbursement provided
    • Scheduled and occasional after-hours and weekend work required

Required Qualifications
  • Experience with telecommunications systems (IP-PBX, VoIP, SIP)
  • Basic networking knowledge (TCP/IP, switching, routing)
  • Experience troubleshooting voice and carrier services
  • Ability to perform physical installation work (cabling, racks, equipment)
  • Strong problem-solving and documentation skills
  • Help desk or end-user support experience
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Mitel, ShoreTel, or similar systems
  • Experience with mobile device management (MDM)
  • Experience in multi-site or campus environments
  • Familiarity with ticketing and remote support tools

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in wiring closets, equipment rooms, and active environments
  • Ability to lift and move IT equipment (up to approximately 40 lbs)
  • Ability to use tools for cabling and equipment installation

Salary $90,000-$110,000 commensurate with experience
