JOB TITLE: SCHOOL NURSE
SUMMARY OF POSITION/PURPOSE:
Providing the fullest possible educational opportunity for each student by minimizing absence due to illness and injury through prevention, early detection, correction and appropriate referral of health problems
SUPERVISOR:
School Principal
EDUCATION REQUIRED/PREFERRED:
Required: Valid New Mexico School Nurse Licensure by NMPED. Current New Mexico R.N. Licensure.
Preferred: Bachelor's Degree
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Establish and maintain a comprehensive school health program which promotes health and prevents illness and injury
  2. Administer first aid to students and staff
  3. Evaluate students complaints of illness and make decisions about utilizing the nursing process. Collect information about the health and developmental status of students in a systematic and continuous manner
  4. Monitor compliance with immunization requirements
  5. Understand state laws, regulations and rules requiring schools to collect immunization history
  6. Notify parents when students need to acquire additional vaccinations
  7. Report immunization data to local and state level as appropriate
  8. Serve as a resource to families regarding community services available for immunizations
  9. Make referrals to health agencies when appropriate
  10. Establish a network of support services including school based health center
