Entry-Level Attorney Opportunity | Excellent Training & Courtroom Experience

Are you a recent law school graduate, newly licensed attorney, or awaiting Michigan Bar results? Looking for an opportunity to gain hands-on courtroom experience while building a rewarding career in public service?

The City is seeking an energetic and motivated Associate City Attorney to join its legal team. This is an excellent opportunity for attorneys early in their careers to gain valuable experience in municipal law, criminal prosecution, litigation, public records compliance, and advising government departments on a wide variety of legal matters.

Working alongside experienced municipal attorneys, you'll receive exposure to a broad range of legal issues while serving a vital role in your community.

What You'll Do

As an Associate City Attorney, you will:

  • Review, investigate, and process Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests using department software systems.
  • Review damage claims and internal complaints and prepare recommendations for resolution.
  • Assist with matters before the 67th District Court.
  • Participate in criminal, civil, and administrative litigation on behalf of the City and its officials and employees.
  • Gain experience with discovery, motion practice, hearings, trials, and appeals.
  • Review and potentially authorize criminal complaints and warrants, including occasional virtual weekend review responsibilities.
  • Assist in drafting and reviewing contracts, ordinances, resolutions, policies, and other legal documents.
  • Provide legal support and guidance to City departments and personnel.
  • Attend meetings of City boards and commissions as assigned.
  • Develop strong working relationships with judges, court personnel, City officials, opposing counsel, and members of the public.
