To earn $200,000 as a virtual therapist, professionals typically need extensive experience, a high billing rate, and a large client base, often working full-time or multiple part-time roles. Specializing in high-demand areas, obtaining advanced certifications, and building a strong online presence can also increase earning potential.

High-paying jobs that can reach $2,000 a day often include specialized roles such as experienced virtual therapists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, or corporate consultants. What is a virtual therapist?

A virtual therapist is a licensed mental health professional who provides therapy sessions through online platforms, such as video calls, phone calls, or chat. This allows clients to receive counseling and support from the comfort of their own homes, making mental health care more accessible and convenient. Virtual therapists can address a wide range of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, stress, and relationship problems, using the same evidence-based techniques as in-person therapists.

What Does a Virtual Therapist Do?

A virtual therapist performs the same function as a conventional therapist in a remote setting using the internet. In this role, you offer a patient ways to cope with ongoing marriage, family, or work issues. You may talk with the client through a website or web app on a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Virtual therapists also help treat a myriad of mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety. Many virtual therapists specialize in a particular discipline within the field, such as family and marriage therapy. Some treatments are harder to give a patient in a virtual setting, so your job also includes determining whether or not virtual counseling is the best choice for your client.

What are some common challenges virtual therapists face when building rapport with clients online?

Virtual therapists often find that building rapport remotely can be challenging due to the lack of in-person cues and potential technology barriers. Establishing trust and a therapeutic alliance may require extra intentional communication, active listening, and creative use of digital tools. Therapists also need to be comfortable troubleshooting technical issues and ensuring privacy for clients in diverse settings. However, with practice and the right strategies, many virtual therapists successfully foster strong, supportive relationships online.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Virtual Therapist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Therapist, you need a solid background in psychology or counseling, a relevant master's degree, and state licensure for clinical practice. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, secure video conferencing tools, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is typically necessary. Exceptional listening skills, empathy, and the ability to build rapport remotely help set outstanding virtual therapists apart. These competencies ensure ethical, effective, and accessible mental health care in a digital environment.

How do I become a virtual therapist?

To become a virtual therapist, you typically need to earn a relevant master's degree in counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field, and obtain licensure or certification required in your jurisdiction. Additionally, gaining experience in therapy and developing skills in telehealth platforms are important steps to practice as a virtual therapist.

Overstory Health is transforming behavioral healthcare by building world-class, patient-centered Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs for individuals navigating high-acuity mental health challenges. Our mission is simple and bold: to provide accessible, dignified care at the moments people need it most. Backed by a clinical model validated by McLean Hospital, we offer comprehensive psychiatric treatment, evidence-based therapy, and support for reintegration into daily life. We measure our success by our patients' progress-greater stability, deeper connection, and renewed confidence during and after their time in our programs.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for pre-licensed or licensed therapists eager to build and deliver care in a world-class innovative PHP/IOP program. As a therapist, you are the heart of our Partial Hospital Program (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) programs. Your daily role will include managing: clinical assessments, group therapy, individual therapy, crisis management, and clinical event documentation / reporting for patients. You will work closely with the full team, including our Clinic Director and Medical Director, to ensure patients receive world-class services.

YOU'LL BE A GOOD FIT IF YOU

  • Have experience delivering high-quality virtual and/or hybrid behavioral health services, including building therapeutic rapport, facilitating engagement, and managing clinical risk in remote settings
  • Are comfortable leveraging technology to provide effective care, facilitate virtual groups, complete documentation, and troubleshoot common telehealth challenges with professionalism and flexibility
  • Have clinical experience working with higher risk adults with mood and psychotic disorders
  • Training and direct care delivery experience in evidence-based practices (such as DBT, CBT, and ACT) and modes (group and individual therapy)
  • Have experience in crisis intervention and conflict resolution
  • Are eager to be part of a fast-paced dynamic team in a start-up environment; this includes being an adaptive and flexible thinker, a desire to be collaborative across disciplines, an eagerness to lead, and being a pragmatic problem-solver
  • Are interested in career growth opportunities within a rapidly growing organization and are willing to wear multiple hats on day one to help the team as needed
  • Enjoy working in a non-hierarchical environment where you will give proactive, practical, and confident feedback and opinion

QUALIFICATIONS

  • W2 position, full-time with availability for 40 hours per week
  • Graduated from an accredited college or university with a minimum of a Master's Degree in Psychology, Social Work, or health-related field.
  • Clinical experience in higher levels of care (PHP/IOP, inpatient, psychiatric emergency rooms, residential preferred; will consider PCP IBH or FQHC settings)
  • Experience delivering both individual therapy and confidence facilitating groups independently
  • Confidence working with Medicaid populations and people with complex social needs
  • Proficiency in Google applications or willing to learn new technology quickly (e.g., Slack, Zoom, Electronic Health Record, etc.)

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide Evidence-Based Therapy: Deliver both group and individual therapy using evidence-based, measurement-informed practices within PHP and/or IOP settings
  • Conduct Patient Assessments: Evaluate patients during intake to determine the appropriate level of care, including Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), or external referral to a community partner
  • Coordinate Patient Care: Maintain comprehensive treatment plans through case notes, correspondence, interdisciplinary team meetings, and collaboration with external providers such as primary care physicians or therapists
  • Address Clinical Needs: Report escalating clinical events, provide crisis care when necessary, and collaborate with the Medical Director to offer recommendations
  • Engage in the Care Team: Contributes actively to a cohesive and efficient team environment, demonstrating a proactive approach to daily responsibilities, open communication, and shared decision-making to enhance outcomes
  • Ensure Compliance and Documentation: Adhere to HIPAA standards and all relevant documentation and regulatory compliance requirements
  • Enhance Care Delivery: Lead efforts to improve clinical pathways and operational processes, and perform additional clinical duties as assigned

  • Competitive base compensation and performance incentives
  • Flexible time off policy (FTO)
  • Medical malpractice insurance for full-time employees
  • Medical insurance coverage (health, dental, vision) with no waiting period for enrollment
  • Short and long-term disability insurance at no cost to you
  • 401K match: 100% of employer match up to first 3% of pay, then 50% of employer match on the next 2% of pay
