TheFisheries & Aquatics Specialistis integral to our Environmental Division's continued growth. The ideal candidate will have a strong passion for fish and aquatic field work, the ability to lead crews, and train junior staff in field data collection, safety best practices, and other skills necessary to succeed as an environmental consultant.

The Work

Hybrid Office (20%) / Field(80%)

  • Focus: Perform field and office tasks on oil & gas, pipeline, infrastructure, watercourse crossing, and renewable energy projects as part of a multi-disciplinary, virtual team.
  • Shifts: Field shifts, typically lasting between 2-10 days. Overnight stays in hotels or camps may also be necessary.
  • Geographic Scope: projects are generally located throughout Alberta
  • Data Collection and Monitoring: Conduct environmental field data collection and construction monitoring activities.
  • Adverse Conditions: Be prepared to work in remote locations and challenging conditions like muddy roads, steep terrain, dense vegetation, and snowy environments.
  • Physical Demands: Carry field equipment such as an electrofisher and other required gear(Up to30lb)
  • Technical Strength:Expertisein the following areas is required:
    • Winter wildlife sweeps (identified dens and tracks)
    • Fish salvage
    • Fish and fish habitat assessments
    • Fish species identification
    • Assessing roadway watercourse crossings
    • Riparian area assessments
    • Water quality monitoring (turbidity)
    • Hydrology
    • Environmental inspections
    • Wetland/aquatic assessment

    • Provincial and Federal environmental legislation

Equipment and Tools

  • Vehicle Operation: Drive light-duty trucks, ATVs, UTVs, and trailers. A valid driver's license isrequired.
  • Field Tools: Use navigational and data collection tools such as Garmin GPS,Avenza, Collector, etc.

Collaboration and Communication

Administrative and Support Tasks

  • Administrative Work: Complete office reporting, QA/QC, data entry, and submission of field dataon time.

Availability

  • Excluding vacation or allotted personal days, Field staff must be available for field work up to 20daysper month, including up to 2 weekends per month.

What you bring to the table

  • Professional Biologist designation or ability to achieve a designation within 6 months
  • Self-declaration as a QAES
  • A diploma or bachelor's degree in biological sciences, conservation biology, or natural resource management
  • 5-9 years of relevant experience
  • Electrofishing certification - Crew Lead certification preferred
  • Experience as a Crew Lead
  • Intermediate level reporting abilities
  • Positive demeanour
  • The ability to liaise with clients and make professional in-field decisions.
  • A love for being on the road and working in both natural and construction environments is essential.
  • Physically fit with the ability to walk extended distances in challenging field conditions.
  • Safety mindset
  • Exceptional communication skills with peers, project managers and clients

The Workplace:

  • This is a hybrid office & field position, which includes working in a virtual environment from your home office as well as 2-10 day field shifts, as the need arises.
