What is video game translation and what does a remote video game translator do?

Video game translation involves converting the text, dialogue, and other in-game content from one language to another to make the game accessible to players in different regions. A remote video game translator works from home or another location outside the main office, using digital tools to translate scripts, menus, subtitles, and promotional materials. They often collaborate with localization teams to ensure cultural accuracy and maintain the game's tone and intent. This role requires strong language skills, cultural knowledge, and sometimes familiarity with gaming terminology.

What are some common challenges faced by remote video game translators, and how can they be addressed?

Remote video game translators often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistency across large volumes of text, adapting cultural references for different regions, and effectively communicating with developers and localization teams who may be in different time zones. To address these challenges, it's important to use translation management tools, establish clear communication channels, and participate in regular team meetings. Staying updated on game content and collaborating closely with editors and QA testers can also help ensure high-quality, contextually accurate translations.
