Job Summary:

Reporting to the SVP, Engineering & Construction, the Vice President, Engineering provides executive leadership and full ownership of NineDot Energy's Engineering function across the company's renewable energy and battery energy storage (BESS) portfolio. This role is accountable for engineering strategy, technical governance, and portfolio-wide engineering outcomes from early feasibility through commissioning and commercial operation.

The VP, Engineering serves as NineDot's senior technical authority, with deep expertise in electrical power systems and SCADA/controls, and broad working knowledge across civil, structural, mechanical, and fire protection disciplines. The role is responsible for final technical decision-making and ensures all engineering solutions meet the highest standards for safety, reliability, constructability, regulatory compliance, cost effectiveness, and long-term asset performance.

In addition to technical leadership, the VP, Engineering is responsible for building and scaling a high-performing engineering organization, establishing clear standards and decision frameworks, and enabling consistent, high-quality technical execution. The role partners closely with Development, Project Planning & Permitting, Construction, Project Controls, Finance, Legal, and Operations to deliver complex projects efficiently and responsibly.

Responsibilities:

Engineering Leadership, Governance & Technical Authority

  • Own and lead the Engineering function, including enterprise engineering strategy, governance, standards, systems, and organizational design.
  • Serve as NineDot's final technical authority, with decision rights to approve, modify, or reject engineering approaches, consultant recommendations, and vendor solutions.
  • Establish, maintain, and evolve enterprise-wide engineering standards and QA/QC frameworks to ensure technical rigor, safety, constructability, and regulatory compliance across the portfolio.
  • Define and implement scalable engineering processes that support portfolio growth while aligning with business objectives, risk tolerance, and long-term asset strategy.
  • Maintain accountability for engineering quality, consistency, and risk management across all projects and development stages.
  • Retain deep technical credibility and hands-on capability to engage in complex or high-risk engineering matters directly.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements, including NEC, NFPA, IEEE, UL, ASCE, NYC Building Code, FDNY regulations, Con Edison, and NYISO standards.
  • Oversee system-level design integrity across electrical power systems, SCADA and controls, grounding, protection coordination, interconnection, fire protection, and life safety systems.

Project & Portfolio Engineering Oversight

  • Own engineering outcomes across the full project lifecycle, from early feasibility through IFC, construction support, and as-built documentation.
  • Ensure engineering solutions align with cost, schedule, safety, constructability, operational objectives, and portfolio risk tolerance.
  • Lead and sponsor integrated design reviews at key milestones, holding internal teams and external engineering vendors accountable for multidisciplinary coordination, technical quality, and delivery performance.
  • Provide executive technical leadership in resolving complex RFIs, nonconformances, change requests, and field engineering issues, including defining and validating system testing, commissioning, and acceptance procedures (FAT/SAT) in coordination with Construction and Operations.
  • Drive continuous improvement through post-project technical reviews, incorporating lessons learned into standards, specifications, and engineering processes.

Organizational & People Leadership

  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing Engineering organization by establishing clear structure and accountability, recruiting and growing top talent, and fostering a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Cross-Functional, External Engagement & Continuous Improvement

  • Serve as NineDot's senior external technical representative, leading regulatory engagement and stakeholder relationships with NYC DOB, FDNY, utilities, AHJs, engineering partners, and industry forums.

Required education and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited institution (civil, electrical, mechanical, or related engineering discipline required).
  • Minimum of 15+ years of progressive engineering experience, including leadership of multidisciplinary engineering teams on complex energy or infrastructure projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required; New York State licensure strongly preferred (or ability to obtain within 6 months).
  • Proven experience leading and scaling engineering teams within a multi-project development environment.
  • Experience supporting energy projects in New York City that have successfully achieved permitting approval from the NYC Department of Buildings is preferred.
  • Strong familiarity with New York State and local regulations governing renewable energy and battery storage projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical concepts to executive leadership and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities, assess risk, and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and results-driven.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite and Microsoft Office; experience with Procore, SAP and Airtable or similar tools is a plus.
