Dartmouth Health’s Department of Radiology is seeking a Vice Chair (VC) for Academic Affairs (AA) to join our dynamic Department in the beautiful Upper Valleyregion of New Hampshire and Vermont. Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, the system’s central clinical hub and Academic Medical Center, is located immediately adjacent to bustling college town of Hanover, NH. Hanover is home to the world-renowned Dartmouth College and the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine.

We are seeking a skilled, visionary, and impactful radiologist leader to define and execute a vision for a highly engaged academic faculty where promotion, academic success, scholarly impact, and career development are all prized. Our department is part of a thriving academic medical center that is strongly affiliated with one of the best medical schools in the country; this defining feature of our work can be enhanced and optimized by the right academic affairs leader. The majority of the VC’s work will be working with faculty at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC), our main academic medical center, which includes an NCI-designated cancer center, a comprehensive stroke center, and a level I trauma center. The Vice Chair of Academic Affairs will also serve an important role at the system level working on faculty development and faculty support for Departmental radiologists actively working onsite at others sites across the region.

For her or his clinical component, the Vice Chair will join a clinical section based on the candidate’s subspeciality interest and preferred practice area (e.g. abdominal imaging, neuroradiology, mammography, etc). Generally, this role is best suited for candidates at the Full (or possibly Associate) Professor rank.

Position Summary

The Vice Chair of Academic Affairs will be a nationally known leader in the field of academic affairs, wellness, promotions, faculty development, and workplace culture. The Vice Chair should be adept at vision setting and execution. In addition to expertise in academic affairs, he or she will have a reputation for excellence in delivering clinical care, teaching, mentoring, and scholarship. The Vice Chair of Academic Affairs will lead our Department’s Promotions committee as well as all most development programs aimed at career building. In the realm of teaching to teach, the VC for AA will partner with the VC for Education to help create programing that enhances our faculty’s ability to teach. The VC for AA will form a vital bridge with the Dean’s office and the school-wide promotions and tenure committee, making themselves a valued source of expert information pertaining to all aspects of appointments and promotion. The VC for AA will assist the Chair in assembling promotion packets and guiding candidates for promotion. The VC will also assist the Chair in the area of recruitment, serving as a resource for candidates pertaining to appointments, and generally being in a position to help with recruitment on the Chair’s behalf. As all Vice Chairs do, the VC for AA will support all three core missions of the Department:

Supporting Clinical Excellence:

The VC for AA’s responsibilities do not directly involve oversight of the clinical mission, however, a successful faculty are able to provide the highest level of clinical care. As faculty members establish expertise that is recognized nationally, that expertise benefits patients at home. The VC for AA will serve as a partner for the VC for Clinical Operations in areas of collaboration are needed.

Supporting Education:

The Dartmouth Health Department of Radiology is a national leader in teaching radiology to medical students, with numerous nationally and internationally recognized educators and extensive dissemination of scholarly work pertaining educational techniques and novel programs. Dartmouth Radiology hosts multiple outstanding residencies, including in Diagnostic Radiology and an integrated DR/IR program, as well as multiple fellowships. Our students, residents, and fellows learn from our diverse and successful faculty members, all of whom serve as academic role models. To the extent faculty can maximally succeed in their areas of interest, that success will optimize their role modeling of what it is to be a successful and balanced academic radiologist. The VC for AA will liaise with the VC for Education in areas of overlap, most notably faculty development programs centered on teaching, and the VC for AA will indirectly impact the education provided to learners by helping faculty be happy and successful in their endeavors.

Supporting Scholarship

In conjunction with the VC for Research, the VC for AA serves as a central leader in encouraging scholarly activity. The VC AA helps faculty prioritize and document their efforts in research, while also promoting other aspects needed for promotion, including establishing a clinical expertise, serving on local, regional, and national committees, engaging in academic societies, serving as reviewers for study sections and journals etc. A full gamut of academic activities are required for academic promotion and a satisfying fulfilling academic career, and the VC for AA serves as the department’s main cheerleader, coach, and mentor in supporting these activities. The VC for AA is also the primary educator regarding how to document all activities that belong on a well-structures CV. We anticipate the VC for AA to themselves be an accomplished academic actively participating in academic pursuits.

Reporting Structure

The Vice Chair for AA will report directly to Chair of Radiology. The Vice Chair for AA will have a home section (and section head) for their clinical work. For projects and initiatives under the Vice Chair’s purview, the VC will serve as a leader for teams of physicians and staff.

Overall, the VC should have the ability to engage and inspire others, including physician colleagues, department staff, and others throughout the institution. The Department values a highly collaborative, respectful, caring, and engaging work environment, for which all Departmental leaders are asked to contribute. There is a strong working relationship with other departments and divisions and all sections participates in a large volume of multidisciplinary meetings and group conferences.

The selected candidate will join Dartmouth Health’s 102 radiologists. We are an internationally known Department with a deep history in the field, beginning with acquiring the first clinical x-ray in the United States in 1896. Since then, we have continued an upward trajectory growing in breadth and expanding our services across New England.

While Dartmouth Health includes many hospitals and clinic sites, this position is based at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, our tertiary care central hub which also serves as the system’s Academic Medical Center. DHMC is the state’s only Level 1 trauma center, a certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, and is home to a fleet of helicopter and ground-based medical transport services.

Position Requirements:

• American Board of Radiology Certified in Diagnostic Radiology
• Must obtain and maintain a medical license in both New Hampshire and Vermont
• Training and/or experience in deeply academic environments, ideally with some experience in academic affairs
• The ability to be appointed at the Associate or full Professor rank, with a preference for candidates at the Full Professor rank.
• This is a 1.0 FTE position.

• Demonstrated success within an academically oriented radiology department preferred; a track record of delivering strong results that are mission-driven.
• Proven ability to mentor and sponsor others.
