Job Summary:
The Vice Chair of Anesthesiology is a senior leader responsible for providing strategic, operational, and clinical oversight for anesthesiology services at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. Working in partnership with the Department Chair, the Vice Chair ensures high-quality, safe patient care, manages community-based clinical operations, and promotes alignment between community practices and the broader academic, educational, and clinical goals. The ideal candidate is a practicing, board-certified anesthesiologist with a proven track record of medical staff leadership, operational efficiency, and a collaborative approach to perioperative care.
Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic, operational, and clinical leadership for anesthesiology services at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, ensuring alignment with the mission, goals, and standards of Stony Brook Medicine.
  • Oversee community-based anesthesia operations, including the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care, clinical performance, resource utilization, and service expansion initiatives.
  • Lead and support faculty anesthesiologists, CRNAs, CAAs, and other clinical staff by fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, professional development, and well-being.
  • Collaborate closely with the Department Chair and executive leadership to establish departmental priorities, implement strategic initiatives, integrate community practices, and drive organizational growth.
  • Promote patient safety and quality through the development and oversight of clinical protocols, quality metrics, peer review activities, root-cause analyses, and continuous quality improvement programs.
  • Support financial and operational effectiveness through workforce management, capital equipment evaluation, and optimization of resources across community practice sites.
  • Maintain an active clinical role while ensuring the consistent application of evidence-based practices and regulatory standards throughout the network.
  • Serve as a key liaison among community providers, hospital leadership, and academic departments, strengthening collaboration and advancing integration between community-based care and the academic mission of Stony Brook Medicine.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Completion of an accredited Anesthesiology residency program.
  • Board Certification in Anesthesiology.
  • Eligible for or currently holding an unrestricted medical license.
  • Eligible for faculty appointment consistent with institutional requirements.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of post-residency clinical experience in anesthesiology.
  • 3+ years?of progressive leadership experience (e.g., Clinical Director, Chief of Anesthesia, or Director of Obstetric/Regional Anesthesia) within a community hospital or health system setting.
  • Demonstrated success in managing diverse clinical teams and improving perioperative metrics (e.g., first-case on-time starts, turnover times).

Must be able to sit for long periods of time, and must have manual dexterity to work computer systems and keyboard.
