Vertical Director information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Vertical Director, and why are they important?

To excel as a Vertical Director, you need deep industry expertise, strategic planning abilities, and a proven track record in managing business units or verticals, often supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with CRM systems, business analytics platforms, and project management tools is commonly required. Exceptional leadership, stakeholder management, and communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies drive growth, ensure effective cross-functional collaboration, and position the vertical for long-term success.

What is a Vertical Director?

A Vertical Director is a senior leader responsible for overseeing all operations, strategies, and performance within a specific business vertical or industry segment of a company. This role involves setting goals, managing teams, driving revenue growth, and ensuring that products or services meet the unique needs of their targeted market. Vertical Directors often collaborate with sales, marketing, product development, and executive leadership to align their vertical's objectives with the overall company strategy. They play a key role in shaping and executing business plans that address industry-specific challenges and opportunities.

What is the difference between Vertical Director vs Vertical Manager?

AspectVertical DirectorVertical Manager
ResponsibilitiesOversees multiple verticals, sets strategic direction, manages senior teamsManages specific verticals, implements strategies, supervises day-to-day operations
CredentialsTypically requires extensive experience, leadership skills, and industry knowledgeRequires relevant industry experience, certifications, and managerial skills
Work EnvironmentExecutive-level, strategic planning, cross-department collaborationOperational focus, team management, project execution
Industry UsageCommon in large organizations with multiple verticalsUsed in organizations with defined vertical segments

The Vertical Director focuses on strategic oversight across multiple verticals, while the Vertical Manager handles the daily management of a specific vertical. Both roles require industry experience and leadership skills, but the director operates at a higher, more strategic level, often managing managers or senior teams.

What are some common challenges faced by a Vertical Director when aligning multiple teams within a specific industry sector?

As a Vertical Director, one common challenge is ensuring alignment across diverse teams such as sales, marketing, product development, and customer support within a specific industry sector. Each team may have different goals and metrics, so it's essential to foster clear communication, establish shared objectives, and regularly synchronize strategies. Navigating varying customer needs, evolving market trends, and internal resource constraints can also require adaptability and strong leadership. Successful Vertical Directors often facilitate cross-functional meetings and leverage data-driven insights to drive cohesion and performance.

What jobs make around $100,000 a year?

For a Vertical Director, salaries around $100,000 are common in mid- to senior-level management roles within industries like retail, manufacturing, or logistics, especially with experience and leadership skills. Other roles that often reach this salary level include project managers, sales managers, and certain engineering positions, depending on the company and location.

Sales Vertical Director - Retail

Windfall

San Francisco, CA โ€ข On-site

$330K - $375K/yr

Full-time

Posted 12 days ago

Job description

Weโ€™re hiring a Director of Retail to own and build this vertical. The short version: youโ€™ll carry a bag, youโ€™ll build a team, and youโ€™ll help define how Windfall goes to market across luxury retail, e-commerce, consumer brands, and adjacent retail segments.

This is a player/coach role - intentionally so. Youโ€™ll personally lead outreach and engagement across our top 50โ€“100 Retail accounts while simultaneously hiring, developing, and managing the AEs who will eventually scale this into a standalone business. Windfallโ€™s wealth data unlocks high-impact use cases for retailers - identifying HNW customers, personalizing outreach, powering loyalty programs, and driving clienteling at scale. Youโ€™ll help retailers understand why that matters and build the motion to close it.

Youโ€™ll work directly with our co-founders, product, and marketing to shape Windfallโ€™s Retail strategy - what we build, how we position it, and who we prioritize. If you want a job where you just manage, this isnโ€™t it.

Weโ€™re on a mission to change how organizations perceive and use people data. And we hold true to our core values of: (1) Be an excellent communicator; (2) Operate with transparency; (3) Provide leverage, not optimization; (4) Win When Our Customers Win; and (5) Act with integrity and trust.

Responsibilities:
  • Account ownership: Direct outreach, pipeline development, and deal execution across Windfallโ€™s top 50-100 Retail accounts, youโ€™re not handing this off - youโ€™re running it
  • Team leadership & buildout: Hire, coach, and develop the AE team for the Retail vertical - from first rep to full team, you set the bar and hold it
  • Vertical strategy: Partner with co-founders, product, and marketing to define ICP, messaging, product priorities, and go-to-market motion for Retail, this is a seat at the table, not a consulting exercise
  • Revenue accountability: Own the Retail number - new bookings, retention, and expansion, the verticalโ€™s performance is yours
  • Cross-functional influence: Translate retail market dynamics into product feedback, competitive positioning, and partnership priorities, youโ€™re the voice of the customer inside the building
Requirements:
  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree
  • 5+ years of enterprise SaaS sales experience, with a demonstrable track record of closing complex, multi-stakeholder deals
  • 3+ years of sales leadership experience - youโ€™ve built or managed a team and have the scar tissue to show for it
  • Deep fluency in retail - whether youโ€™ve sold into the space or operated within it, you understand the buyer, the workflow, and how decisions get made across marketing, loyalty, and digital teams
  • Familiarity with luxury retail, e-commerce, department stores, specialty retail, or consumer brands is a strong signal
  • Experience selling data, analytics, or customer intelligence solutions is a meaningful plus
  • You think in systems and build them that way - you know how to create a repeatable motion, not just close deals
  • Youโ€™re direct, organized, and not precious about being a player in a player/coach role
  • Based in or willing to relocate to San Francisco
Additional Information:
The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across California. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. We also offer a comprehensive benefits package, which you can explore on ourย careersย site.
ย
California: Compensation range is $330k - $375k + Equityย
