Job Description
General Summary:
The Associate Director Business Development and Strategic Finance is a key member of Vertex's Financial Planning & Analysis organization. The role partners closely with members of the executive team to provide financial direction and strategic insights in support for potential M&A, licensing, collaborations and investments to help drive Vertex external innovation efforts.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Partners with Business Development and finance team members to lead complex analysis for a wide range of potential transactions to execute Vertex strategy
  • Brings insights, challenge, alternatives and solutions, not just information to each individual project
  • Leads financial evaluations and serves as main point of contact for BD Transactions, External Innovation and Alliance Management teams
  • Build financial valuation model supporting potential M&A, licensing, collaboration and investments transactions
  • Conducts detailed financial analysis, build P&L and cash flows for target companies/assets
  • Drives analysis of business inputs and test underlying assumptions of the business case
  • Conducts industry research, public information and competitive landscaping on potential targets; build an outside-in valuation that informs strategic collaborations
  • Coordinates with COFO organization: accounting, FP&A, Tax, HR and treasury to make sure analysis incorporates aligned view from organization and articulates clearly potential impact of each analysis
  • Connects the dots, creates analysis that clearly articulates what impact will our decisions have on Vertex at large, not just individual silos

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Financial modeling and data analysis experience required: excellent MS Excel skills required
  • Ability to conduct research and summarize key findings clearly, whilst displaying highest professionalism in an executive setting
  • Deep understanding of valuation methodologies for complex analysis on potential transactions
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and can act without having the complete picture or perfect information
  • Expertise with PowerPoint; Knowledge of Hyperion.
  • Excellent analytical and critical-thinking skills; employs a critical eye to challenge inputs and assumptions
  • Strong business acumen and judgment, and knowledge of the company's markets/products and industry trends.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and an eagerness to collaborate with colleagues (within or outside of finance) in sharing insights and learnings and partnering to ensure timely execution of project plans.
  • Possesses a continuous improvement mindset, with flexibility and ability to adapt to change.

Education and Experience:
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in banking, consulting and/or corporate financial BD, preferably in pharma and biotech organizations
  • Bachelors degree in Finance/Accounting, Economics or related field required. MBA preferred

Pay Range:
$156,000 - $234,000
Disclosure Statement:
The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
