How much do people make on USPS contracts?

USPS contractors' earnings vary depending on the type of contract and services provided, but many independent contractors or small businesses working with USPS can earn from several thousand to tens of thousands of dollars annually. Income often depends on the volume of mail or packages handled, contractual terms, and operational efficiency.

What is the new contract for USPS employees?

The USPS contract for employees typically involves negotiations on wages, benefits, and working conditions, and updates are announced through official USPS channels. Recent contracts have included pay raises, improved health benefits, and changes to work schedules, often covering multi-year agreements. Employees and applicants should review official USPS communications or union updates for the latest details.

How do I get USPS contracts?

To obtain USPS contracts, businesses must register as approved vendors through the USPS Supplier Registration system, submit proposals in response to solicitations, and meet specific requirements such as insurance and compliance standards. Successful contractors often need to demonstrate reliability, experience, and the ability to fulfill USPS service needs.

Does the USPS hire independent contractors?

The USPS does not directly hire independent contractors for its core postal services. However, it contracts with independent delivery service providers and contractors for certain functions like parcel delivery and last-mile services, often requiring specific licensing and insurance. These contractors operate under separate agreements and are responsible for their own taxes and equipment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a USPS Contract Worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a USPS Contract Worker, you need a valid driver's license, a clean driving record, strong organizational skills, and the ability to meet USPS screening requirements. Familiarity with postal scanning devices, route management systems, and basic mail handling procedures is typically required. Reliability, time management, and excellent customer service are crucial soft skills for this role. These qualifications ensure timely, secure, and accurate mail delivery, which is essential for maintaining USPS service standards.

What are USPS contract jobs?

USPS contract jobs refer to positions or services that are provided to the United States Postal Service (USPS) through contracts with private individuals or companies, rather than by direct USPS employees. These roles often include mail transportation (Highway Contract Routes), custodial work, and facility maintenance. Contractors are responsible for fulfilling the terms of their contracts, which may include specific delivery routes, schedules, and performance standards. They do not receive federal employee benefits but can offer flexible work opportunities and business ownership for individuals or small businesses.

What is "Cash in Lieu of Benefits"?

Cash in Lieu of Benefits is a USPS contract benefit. Drivers on USPS routes who decline RTS health insurance receive an additional $5.36/hr on the first 40 USPS hours per week — paid directly on top of base pay. If you're already covered through a spouse, the VA, or another source, this puts real money back in your pocket every week.

What We Expect on the USPS Routes (Routes 1, 2, and 3)

USPS contracts are built on one thing: consistency and on-time performance. USPS pays for the reliability of our trailers being where they need to be, when they need to be there. If you're the type of driver who takes pride in running a tight, predictable schedule, these routes are built for you.

We're looking for drivers who will:

  • Run on schedule, every shift. Late arrivals impact USPS operations and the entire RTS contract.
  • Communicate immediately with Operations or the Post Office if anything threatens the schedule — traffic, weather, mechanical, anything.
  • Represent RTS professionally at every USPS facility. You are the face of the company.
  • Follow USPS yard and safety rules — vest, closed-toe shoes, visible Postal ID, 5 MPH yard speed, spotters always have right of way, chock trailers, no idling.
  • Protect chain of custody — never break a USPS seal, verify registry bags and seal numbers, lock and seal trailers before leaving.
  • Check in with the Expeditor on Duty at every stop and follow load/unload procedures.

If running on time and doing things the right way is a point of pride for you, you'll fit in here.

What We Expect on the Dedicated Shuttle (Route 4)

This is a long-standing, year-round dedicated account. It has busy days and slow days — that's the nature of the work — but the pay stays consistent because we value the same thing the customer does: a reliable driver who shows up every day, handles the freight professionally, and keeps the account running smoothly. Consistency is what makes this seat one of the best local shuttle gigs in the city.
