Used Car Dealerships are businesses that sell pre-owned vehicles and operate as a licensed entity. Car Salespeople work within these dealerships, directly engaging with customers to sell vehicles. While dealerships manage the overall business, salespeople focus on customer interactions and sales. Understanding this distinction helps in targeted job searches and industry insights.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Used Car Dealership professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in a used car dealership, strong sales acumen, automotive knowledge, and customer service skills are essential, often supported by a high school diploma or higher education in business or automotive fields. Familiarity with dealership management systems (DMS), CRM software, and vehicle history reporting tools like Carfax is typically required. Outstanding negotiation, interpersonal communication, and problem-solving abilities help professionals build trust and close deals effectively. These skills and tools are crucial for maximizing sales, ensuring customer satisfaction, and maintaining business profitability in a competitive market.

What are some typical challenges faced by sales professionals at a used car dealership?

Sales professionals at used car dealerships often encounter challenges such as meeting monthly sales targets, handling diverse customer needs, and staying updated on inventory changes. They must also navigate negotiations and build trust with customers who may be cautious about buying pre-owned vehicles. Success in this role often requires strong communication skills, adaptability, and a thorough understanding of both the vehicles and financing options available.

What is a used car dealership?

A used car dealership is a business that sells pre-owned vehicles to customers. These dealerships acquire cars through trade-ins, auctions, or direct purchases from individuals, and then inspect, service, and resell them. Used car dealerships often offer financing options, warranties, and vehicle history reports. They provide a wide selection of makes and models, catering to various budgets and preferences. Buying from a reputable used car dealership can offer more peace of mind compared to private sellers.

How much does a car salesman make on a $30,000 car?

A car salesperson at a used car dealership typically earns a commission based on the profit margin or a percentage of the sale price, often ranging from 20% to 30%. For a $30,000 car, this could translate to a commission of approximately $600 to $900, depending on dealership policies and the salesperson's commission structure.

What qualifications do you need to work at a car dealership?

To work at a used car dealership, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent. Sales positions often require good communication skills and a valid driver's license, while some roles may benefit from prior sales or customer service experience. Licensing or certification is generally not required but can vary by location and position.

How much can you make as a used car dealer?

Used car dealers typically earn a commission-based income that varies widely depending on sales volume, location, and experience. On average, a used car dealer can make between $40,000 and $100,000 annually, with top performers earning more through high sales and effective negotiation skills.

Job description

Ourisman, Trusted Tradition
Here's to those who think differently. The ones who think that a car dealership's first priority should be the guest. Such a candid idea could only come from Ourisman. Because we're forward thinking, just like the communities we serve. Individuals who won't be constrained by how things "have always been done", but instead strive to do things "how they could be done" and "how they should be done." It is a philosophy we have infused into every fabric of our dealerships, from the bottom up, in every department, and in every Ourisman team member. Changing the way we all think about car buying is just the beginning.
Role Summary
Ourisman Automotive Group is seeking an experienced and results-driven Used Car Manager to assist in leading the used car sales team. The Used Car Manager reinforces high standards for performance and customer service while closely collaborating with other departments to ensure seamless operations.
More about the role
  • Ensure all sales processes and documentation meet state and federal regulations, as well as dealership policies.
  • Analyze and report on sales performance, including metrics such as sales volume, customer satisfaction score, etc.
  • Recruit, train, and motivate the used car sales team, setting clear performance expectations and conducting regular performance reviews.
  • Coach and develop team members, helping them build product knowledge, sales skills, and customer service expertise.

  • Lead, motivate, and mentor the used car sales team, ensuring a positive work environment that encourages high performance and continuous development.
  • Maintain accurate records of used vehicle transactions, ensuring compliance with dealership policies and legal standards.
  • Work closely with the Service and Parts departments to ensure vehicles are properly inspected, reconditioned, and ready for sale.

What we look for
  • Proven experience in automotive sales, preferably in used car sales management or a related role.
  • In-depth knowledge of automotive market trends, inventory management, and sales processes. Proficient in dealership management systems (DMS), CRM software, and digital sales platforms.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively present information and negotiate deals.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret sales data and make strategic decisions.
  • A strong commitment to providing excellent customer service and maintaining high customer satisfaction.

Benefits
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
