Position Summary
The University College Advisement Center (UCAC) invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible Administrative Assistant 1 (AA1) position at The University of New Mexico's main campus.
UCAC provides academic advisement and support to a diverse student population, including undecided/exploratory students, pre-health students, liberal arts and integrative studies majors, and non-degree seeking students. As the first point of contact for the center, the Administrative Assistant plays an important role in creating a welcoming, professional, and student-centered environment.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys helping others, thrives in a fast-paced office setting, and values teamwork and organization. The successful candidate will support the daily operations of a highly skilled academic advisement center while delivering exceptional customer service to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Greeting and assisting visitors in person and by phone
  • Scheduling academic advisement appointments
  • Managing front desk and reception area operations
  • Answering telephone and relaying messages
  • Performing general administrative and office support tasks
  • Supporting UCAC staff with day-to-day operational needs

This is an in-person position located on UNM's main campus. Remote work is not available for this role.

Conditions of Employment
  • If this position is assigned to the Athletics Department, either administratively or functionally, compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations is required.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • If located at the UNM Children's Campus, successful candidate must pass a comprehensive post-offer, pre-employment criminal and New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) fingerprint background check, and a continued successful status will be verified by periodic future background checks.
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in higher education, student services, admissions, advising, or a related administrative support environment preferred
  • Demonstrated empathy and active listening skills, with the ability to effectively assist students, staff, and community members while responding to high-volume and repetitive inquiries
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with diverse populations
  • Proven commitment to providing exceptional customer service in a student-centered environment
  • Proficiency in Zoom and Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and accuracy when handling student information and record
