What is a UN internship?

A UN internship is a temporary position offered by the United Nations to students and recent graduates who want to gain practical experience in international relations, development, human rights, and other areas related to the UN’s mission. These internships typically last from two to six months and are available at UN offices around the world. Interns work on real projects, attend meetings, and collaborate with UN staff, gaining valuable insight into the workings of the organization. Most internships are unpaid, but they provide a unique opportunity to network and build a career in international organizations.

Does the UN do paid internships?

The United Nations offers paid internships in some cases, typically providing a stipend to cover living expenses. However, many UN internships are unpaid or offer only a small allowance, and eligibility often requires current enrollment or recent graduation. Applicants should review specific internship opportunities for detailed compensation information.

How can I get an UN internship?

To secure an UN internship, applicants should review the United Nations Careers website for available programs, meet the specific eligibility criteria such as education level and language skills, and submit a complete application including a resume and motivation letter. Internships typically require students or recent graduates and may involve competitive selection processes. Gaining relevant experience, language proficiency, and understanding of international issues can improve chances of acceptance.

What types of projects or tasks do interns typically work on during a UN Internship?

Interns collaborate closely with experienced professionals and may also contribute to policy analysis, data collection, or the development of programmatic materials. The specific responsibilities vary depending on the department, but interns are encouraged to take initiative and gain hands-on experience in an international, multicultural environment.

How hard is it to get an internship in UN?

Securing an internship at the UN is competitive, often requiring strong academic performance, relevant language skills, and prior experience in international affairs or related fields. Applicants typically go through a rigorous selection process that includes assessments and interviews, and having a good understanding of UN operations and proficiency in multiple languages can improve chances.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a UN Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a UN Intern, you generally need to be enrolled in or have recently completed a relevant undergraduate or graduate program, with strong research, analytical, and writing skills. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and sometimes knowledge of additional languages or specialized software is expected.
    • Cimentaciones profundas (pilotes, micropilotes, hincado).
    • Estabilización de taludes y geotecnia aplicada.
    • Reparación y refuerzo estructural (FRP, shotcrete, inyecciones).

Requisitos Altamente Deseables (Plus):

Compensación: $55,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
