A UML Specialist is primarily responsible for creating and maintaining detailed diagrams that map out software architectures, workflows, and system interactions throughout the development lifecycle. You will often work closely with project managers, developers, and business analysts to ensure that requirements are correctly translated into technical models. Daily tasks may include conducting requirement analysis, updating documentation as project scopes evolve, and facilitating communication between technical and non-technical team members. This role plays a key part in reducing miscommunication, identifying design issues early, and supporting a smooth development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the UML position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a UML (Unified Modeling Language) Designer or Specialist, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in software modeling, and a background in computer science or software engineering. Expertise with UML modeling tools like Enterprise Architect, Visual Paradigm, or IBM Rational Rose and familiarity with software development methodologies are typically required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and collaborative skills help translate complex technical concepts to various stakeholders. These skills are vital for accurately modeling and documenting software systems, ensuring coherent design processes and effective team collaboration.

What is a UML?

A UML job typically involves designing and modeling software systems using the Unified Modeling Language (UML). Professionals in this role create diagrams such as use case diagrams, class diagrams, and sequence diagrams to visually represent system architecture and workflows. Job description

Description

The Model Based Systems Engineer II/III develops and applies model-based systems engineering (MBSE) methods to support requirements, architecture, design, analysis, and verification activities across system lifecycles. This role creates and maintains system models and digital artifacts that improve traceability, technical rigor, and decision speed for NSWC Crane mission programs. The engineer collaborates across disciplines to ensure model data supports interoperability, digital thread objectives, and integration readiness. This position is contingent upon award. Award is expected around the end of the year (2026).

Requirements

- Bachelor's degree in engineering, operations research, or other sciences requiring advanced math skills (e.g., business, mathematics, statistics, probability), per eCRAFT Model Based Systems Engineer II labor category.
- 3+ years of professional experience performing Model Based Systems Engineering.
- Demonstrated familiarity with MBSE principles and application of SysML or UML in professional settings.
- Experience with cross-platform collaborative MBSE/digital environments to design, track, visualize, and analyze system models.
- Knowledge of Department of Defense Architecture Framework / Unified Architecture Framework (DoDAF/UAF).
- Strong communication skills to support model reviews, requirements traceability discussions, and stakeholder alignment.
- Active DoD Secret clearance (or clearable to that level) required due to support for classified programs and facilities.

- Practical experience using MBSE tools in collaborative digital engineering environments (e.g., Cameo/MagicDraw, Sparx EA, Rhapsody, or equivalent).
- Working knowledge of SysML/UML and their application to requirement decomposition, interface definition, and architecture analysis.
- Familiarity with DoDAF/UAF viewpoints and model products for defense-oriented architecture development.
- Experience coordinating with systems, software, test, cybersecurity, and logistics stakeholders to maintain model fidelity across development phases.
- Ability to produce model-based analyses and concise technical outputs for engineering and leadership review.
