UCLA Extension is considered one of the top programs of its kind, offering to more than 35,000 students per year approximately 4,500 classes and non-degree certificate programs to meet the professional development, continuing education, and personal enrichment needs of the full spectrum of nontraditional students as well as companies and organizations throughout and beyond the Los Angeles region.
Course / Program Description
The department of legal programs seeks applications from experienced and engaging instructors for its in-person summer legal communication course. This program is specifically designed to prepare incoming international students for the U.S. LL.M. program. The primary emphasis is on increasing student confidence and accuracy in speaking and building aural comprehension skills needed for success in the LL.M. classroom.
Instructors with experience teaching LLM students, law students, or teaching English as Foreign language are especially encouraged to apply.
Job Description
Summer Legal Communication Instructor
  • Modality: In person
  • Location: UCLA Westwood Campus, Los Angeles, CA
  • Course Duration: 4 weeks starting in mid-July
  • Course Time: 9:30 am to 12:00 pm: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday.

Using an established curriculum, instructors will facilitate activities, exercises, and discussions about readings to advance student English proficiency in oral expression and aural comprehension. Materials are designed to take advantage of the participants' legal experience and knowledge while incorporating a fundamental introduction to aspects of the U.S. legal system. Instructors must be comfortable facilitating small groups and adept at encouraging and supporting student participation.
Instructor Duties:
  • Speaking & Aural Comprehension: Increase students' confidence and accuracy in oral communication; build the listening skills required to understand lectures, engage in dialogue, and participate in classroom discussions.
  • Vocabulary & Reading: Develop students' professional and academic reading comprehension and vocabulary to prepare them for reading legal casebooks.
  • Skills Application: Guide participants in practicing professional-level listening, speaking, reading, and limited writing across contexts relevant to U.S. law school culture such as writing a case brief or analyzing a case.
  • Curriculum Execution: Deliver lessons four times a week following an establishing curriculum empathy, encouragement, and enthusiasm.
  • Assessment: Assess in-class activities, review homework, and assign final grades within the timelines established by the program.
  • Coordinate with Peer Instructors: Regularly communicate with peer instructors and program administrators, as needed to ensure consistency of experience for all program participants.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications
  • Education: BA, JD*, LLM*, or a Master's degree in TESOL/Applied Linguistics - Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience teaching law, legal English, or teaching academic skills to international law students or professionals.
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with the U.S. legal system, legal vocabulary, and the culture of U.S. law schools helpful but not required.
  • Skills: Excellent interpersonal, cross-cultural communication, and instructional delivery skills.
