A new vacancy currently exists for a part-time Travel Training Instructor within the Division of Student Services at the Chester County Intermediate Unit. This position will be located throughout Chester County within the Discover program at the CCIU.
This position will provide travel training instruction to students, ages 14 to 21, with cognitive and/or physical impairments other than of a visual nature, to learn safe and independent travel in the community, using public transportation as appropriate, as well as safety with navigation on foot in local communities throughout Chester County. A secondary purpose is to provide instructional strategies to teachers to support students in learning pre-travel training and mobility skills within their school community as part of their educational program.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field required.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience working with persons with disabilities in a community based educational or vocational setting.
  • Ability to relate effectively with students
  • Ability to interact with other school professionals
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Strong problem solving abilities

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Conduct assessments (internal within school building and external within the community) of student skills and needs
  • Conduct environmental analysis on travel routes
  • Select appropriate routes for student travel
  • Develop instructional plans to meet individual student needs
  • Instruct students in the areas of orientation and travel
  • Consult with school personnel to insure safe travel throughout school environments
  • Be familiar with community wide transportation systems and establish collaborative relationships with transportation authorities and police departments to support instructional plans for students
  • Consult with families to inform them of student travel skills and/or limitations
  • Provide consultation and trainings related to independent travel

Position requirement:
  • The holder of this position may be required as part of his or her duties to provide services
    that can be charged to a Medical Assistance program. Clearance as an MA provider by
    both the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the federal government is therefore an
    essential qualification for this position
  • Must complete the Easter Seals Travel Training Program upon hire
  • Valid PA Driver's License

Location:
Countywide Chester County
Salary Range - hourly (2026-2027 school year rates):
$31.82 - $39.77/hour* (Project, Band 13 - 10 month, 185 day position) * Placement on band based on experience in an equivalent role.
Schedule:
Monday through Friday, full time equivalent (FTE) = .5 (up to 18.75 hours per week)
