To thrive as a Transportation Intern, you generally need a background in civil engineering, urban planning, or a related field, along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with tools such as AutoCAD, GIS software, and Microsoft Excel, as well as exposure to transportation modeling systems, is often expected. Strong communication, teamwork, and attention to detail help interns effectively support projects and collaborate with professionals. These competencies ensure that interns can contribute meaningfully to transportation planning and operations, while learning and growing in a fast-paced environment.

What types of projects and tasks can a Transportation Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Transportation Intern, you'll typically support engineers and planners by assisting with data collection, traffic studies, and analysis of transportation systems. You may participate in site visits, help prepare technical reports, and contribute to design or planning documents. Interns often work closely with experienced professionals, gaining exposure to both fieldwork and office-based tasks, while collaborating with team members from various disciplines. This provides a well-rounded introduction to the transportation industry and helps build practical skills for future roles.

What are transportation interns?

Transportation interns are students or recent graduates who work temporarily with transportation departments, agencies, or companies to gain practical experience in the field. Their responsibilities often include assisting with traffic studies, data collection, project planning, and supporting engineers or planners in various transportation projects. This internship provides valuable hands-on learning and exposure to real-world transportation challenges, helping interns build skills and professional networks. Most transportation internships are paid or offer academic credit, and they can be a stepping stone to full-time employment in the transportation sector.
