What Do Transportation Engineers Do?
Transportation engineers plan, design, and implement transportation systems. Transportation engineers consider traffic, population, and other factors to determine the need for a new form of transportation, such as train lines, buses, subways, or new roads, in a specific area or region. They identify methods for incorporating the new form of transportation to reduce local traffic, meet the needs of the community, and fit into the designated budget. Transportation engineers are vital parts of the team that designs public transportation paths and creates highways, bridges, and other structures that enable transportation. Similar job titles include construction engineer, transportation planner, port engineer, and traffic engineer.

What does a Transportation Engineer do?
What is the difference between Transportation Engineer vs Civil Engineer?
| Aspect | Transportation Engineer | Civil Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's in Civil Engineering or Transportation Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred | Bachelor's in Civil Engineering; PE license often required |
| Work Environment | Designing transportation systems, traffic management, roadway planning | Broader infrastructure projects including roads, bridges, buildings |
| Industry Usage | Focused on transportation infrastructure and traffic systems | Wide range of infrastructure projects including transportation |
Transportation Engineers specialize in designing and managing transportation systems, while Civil Engineers have a broader scope covering various infrastructure projects. Both roles often require similar credentials and work in related environments, but Transportation Engineers focus specifically on traffic flow, roadway design, and transit systems.

Job description
Description/Duties First review of applications will be on Monday, July 20, 2026, and weekly thereafter. Transportation Engineer - ($84,725.47 - $118,687.71) A Transportation Engineer is responsible for performing professional transportation engineering work in the Transportation Department and may be assigned to either Transportation Planning or Traffic Studies. Work is performed independently with minimal supervision
Specific duties will vary by assignment and may include: reviewing development and construction plans to ensure compliance with City standards, Transportation Plans, and accepted transportation engineering practices; serving as a transportation liaison to other agencies regarding freeway projects, roadway projects, corridor studies, project assessments, etc., during the scoping, design, and construction phases of projects; assisting with transportation planning projects (examples: transportation network modeling, developing guidelines, standards and codes, and developing systems to organize and log public and private development plans and transportation division input); supervising technical, paraprofessional, or professional staff; researching and analyzing accident statistics; developing and implementing traffic safety education curriculum at public events; bicycle and pedestrian planning/safety; awarding, administering, and monitoring traffic barricade and traffic counting contracts; responding to and providing traffic engineering advice to other City departments, consulting engineers, private contractors, and the general public; advising, planning, and implementing traffic control plans for special City events; and conducting research and analysis on a variety of traffic engineering subjects. This position is responsible for performing related duties as required. A Transportation Engineer performs professional-level transportation engineering functions
Daily duties and assignments require the application of independent judgment, initiative, and decision-making regarding the planning, design, and review of transportation features of engineering projects. Special projects are routinely assigned and reviewed by the Transportation Department Director, Deputy Department Director, City Traffic Engineer, or Senior Transportation Engineer. This position will be responsible for performing engineering plans examination work in support of the central plans review function of the Development Services Division and Transportation Department including screening and preliminary plan review.
Work involves: researching historical background information pertinent to individual permit applications; performing technical analyses of plans, specifications, and reports; and reviewing construction documents for completeness, accuracy, and conformance to applicable codes, ordinances, and national standards. The responsibilities of this class involve technical expertise as well as independent judgment, which must result in precision and accuracy. Incumbents in this class are required to develop and maintain a current knowledge of the policies, procedures, and standards of the City departments they represent.
This is accomplished through reports, plans, meetings, and end results achieved. The Transportation Engineer class is distinguished from the Civil Engineer class by the latter having emphasis on civil engineering features of a project as opposed to transportation engineering features of a project. Employees in this class may progress by noncompetitive promotion to Senior Transportation Engineer upon meeting the specific criteria-based promotion requirements of performance and professional registration.
This class is FLSA exempt professional. Senior Transportation Engineer - ($98,070.75 - $137,385.25) Under general supervision, the Senior Transportation Engineer performs responsible, professional engineering work within the Traffic Engineering section of the Transportation Department. This class performs related work as required
Employees in this class perform the full range of professional engineering assignments within the Transportation Department. Work involves the application of skilled engineering knowledge to a variety of difficult traffic engineering problems, as well as frequent professional contacts with the public. In addition, a Senior Transportation Engineer may direct and review the work performed by lower-level professional, paraprofessional, and technical staff.
Assignments are broad in scope and require the use of independent, professional judgment and initiative in making technical decisions of considerable difficulty. A Senior Transportation Engineer is responsible for conducting all types of traffic engineering studies, traffic signal timing and traffic management, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) design, ITS configuration and maintenance, creating policies and design standards, reviewing roadway design plans, reviewing commercial development and subdivision plans, preparing or checking signing and striping plans for the City street system, and acting as the City's technical expert in these areas. Work is reviewed by the City Traffic Engineer, Supervising Engineer, or ITS Engineer through conferences, inspections, and results achieved.
This class is distinguished from the Transportation Engineer class by the required registration as a Civil Engineer, and by performing more difficult and varied professional engineering work assignments with minimal direct supervision. City employees may progress to this class by noncompetitive promotion upon meeting the specific criteria-based promotion requirements of performance and professional registration. This class is FLSA exempt-professional.
