Job description

Job Title: Civil EIT – Transportation

Job Description

The Civil EIT – Transportation supports the planning and design of municipal infrastructure projects, including roadways, drainage facilities, site grading, and water and sanitary sewer utilities. You collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, and technical staff to produce accurate plans, specifications, reports, and cost estimates that help deliver safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation and utility solutions for local communities.

Responsibilities

  • Design roadway, pedestrian, water and wastewater infrastructure, civil site, and related transportation projects under the guidance of experienced engineers.
  • Develop and refine design drawings, models, and details using AutoCAD and Civil 3D for municipal infrastructure projects.
  • Update designs and project documents based on feedback from project managers, experienced engineers, and clients to ensure technical accuracy and alignment with project goals.
  • Assist in preparing plans, specifications, cost estimates, and engineering reports for transportation and civil infrastructure projects.
  • Support the preparation or modification of reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, environmental impact studies, permits, and project designs.
  • Coordinate with utility companies during the design process to identify conflicts, incorporate utility requirements, and support conflict resolution.
  • Perform technical research and investigations to support design decisions, code compliance, and the application of local and state design standards.
  • Apply knowledge of local and state design standards and guidelines (such as ADOT, MAG, and AASHTO) to roadway and infrastructure design tasks.
  • Conduct basic hydrology and drainage analyses, including performing drainage calculations and using tools such as HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS or similar software for stormwater design.
  • Support construction activities by reviewing plans in the field and coordinating with contractors to help resolve design issues during construction.
  • Use GIS tools, such as ArcGIS, for mapping, data analysis, and integration with civil design projects as needed.
  • Ensure the accuracy and quality of completed tasks by following established drafting and design standards and performing thorough self-checks.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with internal team members and external stakeholders to support project coordination and delivery.
  • Prioritize special projects and daily workload to meet deadlines and deliver work in a timely and efficient manner.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
  • Approximately 2 or more years of experience in civil engineering, transportation engineering, or related infrastructure design.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification in Arizona preferred, or ability to obtain EIT certification.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and AutoCAD Civil 3D for civil and transportation design.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, with strong skills in Excel for calculations, data management, and reporting.
  • Ability to design or assist in the design of municipal infrastructure, including roadways, drainage facilities, site grading, and water and sanitary sewer utilities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with internal staff and external clients.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, manage time effectively, and complete work in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Demonstrated team-oriented, professional attitude with the ability to work collaboratively with engineers, project managers, and technical staff.
  • Self-starter mindset with the ability to take initiative and work with limited supervision on assigned tasks.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Exposure to or familiarity with local and state design standards and guidelines for roadway and infrastructure projects, such as ADOT, MAG, and AASHTO.
  • Experience or coursework in transportation engineering, transportation design, land development, and site development.
  • Knowledge of civil design principles for roadway, civil site, drainage, grading, water, wastewater, and sanitary sewer systems.
  • Experience performing hydrology and drainage analysis, including basic drainage calculations and use of tools like HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, or similar software.
  • Experience supporting construction activities, including reviewing plans in the field and coordinating with contractors to address design-related questions or issues.
  • Working knowledge of GIS tools, such as ArcGIS, for mapping, spatial data analysis, and integration with civil engineering design.
  • Interest in pursuing Professional Engineer (PE) licensure and growing into greater design and project responsibilities.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work.
  • Ability to contribute innovative ideas, learn from colleagues with varying levels of experience, and adapt to evolving project needs.

Work Environment

You work in a collaborative, professional engineering environment that focuses on civil engineering, surveying, and construction services for municipal and community-focused projects. The team includes highly experienced professionals with decades of expertise as well as recent graduates and interns, creating a culture where people continuously learn from one another and share innovative ideas. Day-to-day work primarily takes place in an office setting using tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Microsoft Office, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software, and GIS applications, with occasional visits to the field or construction sites to support project and construction coordination. The culture emphasizes creativity, responsiveness, and a strong dedication to delivering high-quality engineering solutions that positively impact local communities, while encouraging a supportive, team-oriented atmosphere where each person’s contributions are valued.
