What is a transition project manager?

Transition Project Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the smooth transfer of projects, services, or operations from one state to another, such as during mergers, system upgrades, or organizational changes. They plan, coordinate, and execute transition activities to minimize disruption and ensure that objectives are met within budget and timeline constraints. Their role often involves risk assessment, stakeholder communication, and process optimization to ensure a seamless transition and continued business performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a transition project manager?

To thrive as a Transition Project Manager, you need strong project management expertise, experience in change management, and often a relevant degree or certification like PMP or PRINCE2. Familiarity with project management tools (such as MS Project, Jira, or Asana) and IT service management systems (like ITIL) is typically required. Exceptional communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills help you lead teams and navigate organizational change. These abilities are crucial to ensure seamless transitions, minimize disruptions, and achieve project goals on time and within budget.

What are some common challenges faced by transition project managers during organizational change initiatives?

Project Manager
On-Site Role
$40 - $45
ABOUT THE ROLE
Our Client is seeking an experienced Project Manager to drive operational excellence within the Customer Solutions Product organization. This on-site role is responsible for managing Jira Align governance, ensuring portfolio data integrity, overseeing vendor and financial operations, and leading strategic projects that extend beyond the scope of Product Managers. The Project Manager will collaborate closely with Product Leadership to ensure planning accuracy, organizational alignment, financial compliance, and the successful execution of cross-functional initiatives. This position combines portfolio administration, project leadership, process governance, vendor management, and financial administration to enable Product Managers and Product Directors to focus on product strategy, roadmap development, and customer outcomes. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and trusted to independently manage critical operational functions while leading strategic projects on behalf of Product Leadership.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Serve as the Jira Align subject matter expert for the Product organization, maintaining governance standards and best practices across all product portfolios
  • Audit and ensure accuracy and completeness of portfolio data, including Initiatives, Capabilities, Epics, Features, and Stories
  • Ensure all work is properly aligned to Quarterly Releases, OKRs, Strategic Initiatives, Capabilities, Product Teams, and Work Classifications (Top 40, KTLO, or Domain)
  • Partner with Product Managers to maintain ongoing data hygiene and portfolio quality standards, identifying and resolving orphaned work items, incorrect release assignments, misaligned hierarchy relationships, missing OKR connections, and incomplete planning records
  • Support quarterly and annual planning activities by validating portfolio readiness and generating executive reporting, dashboards, and portfolio metrics from Jira Align
  • Monitor roadmap execution and planning adherence across teams, and facilitate portfolio review sessions to ensure strategic alignment and planning accuracy
  • Train and coach Product Managers on Jira Align processes, standards, and reporting capabilities; develop governance documentation, procedures, and training materials
  • Partner with Enterprise Planning teams to ensure compliance with organizational planning requirements
  • Independently manage and deliver projects that are outside the scope, bandwidth, or responsibility of the Product Management team, serving as the accountable owner for assigned strategic and operational projects
  • Lead project planning, execution, risk management, stakeholder communication, and delivery activities; develop and maintain project plans, schedules, milestones, and status reporting
  • Coordinate resources across Product, Technology, Operations, Finance, Legal, Sourcing, CX, and other business functions; identify and mitigate risks, dependencies, and project blockers
  • Facilitate working sessions, steering committees, and executive reviews; track project budgets, timelines, deliverables, and success metrics
  • Drive process improvement initiatives identified by Product Leadership; lead vendor implementation, transition, sunset, and operational readiness efforts as required
  • Manage projects that do not naturally align to a specific Product Manager or product portfolio; produce executive-level updates and communications regarding project progress and outcomes
  • Coordinate vendor management activities and contract administration, tracking contract renewals, expiration dates, and supplier obligations
  • Partner with Sourcing, Finance, Legal, and Procurement teams throughout the contract lifecycle; create and manage purchase requisitions and purchase orders (POs)
  • Process and track vendor invoices, ensuring timely approval and payment processing; reconcile invoices against contract terms and approved expenditures
  • Monitor spending against budget allocations, support annual budget planning and forecasting, and assist with business case development and cost-benefit analyses
  • Maintain accurate financial records and reporting related to vendor engagements; coordinate software renewals, licensing updates, and procurement requests
  • Ensure adherence to corporate purchasing policies and financial controls; maintain vendor performance documentation and operational records
WHAT YOU BRING
  • Experience with Jira Align and Jira administration
  • Strong project and portfolio management skills
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional business and technology initiatives
  • Financial administration experience (purchase orders, invoice management, budget tracking)
  • Advanced proficiency with Excel, Power BI, and portfolio reporting tools
  • Strong reporting and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management capabilities
  • Ability to operate independently and manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Product Operations experience (preferred)
  • Experience supporting Product Management organizations (preferred)
  • PMP, Agile, Scrum, or related certifications (preferred)
