Job description

  • Special Education Teacher - Seaford Comprehensive Program (1822-Year-Old Program - High School)
    Educating children, aged 18-22 years old, who are diagnosed with a number of physical, mental and emotional disabilities.
    Essential Job Functions



  • Guides students to learn vocational and independent living skills and work-based learning.
  • Works with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs.
  • Administers classroom exercises, tests and assessments.
  • Prepares classroom and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs.
  • Maintains record-keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.
  • Monitors classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and ensure students are on task.
  • Plans and monitors work-based learning opportunities for students.
  • Accompanies students on field trips.
  • Contacts parents to foster effective and participatory parent involvement in student education.
  • Monitors students with special needs in all aspects of classroom instruction to maximize inclusion, learning, achievement if IEP objectives, etc.
  • Monitors students with physical or mental disabilities with activities of daily living for the purpose of maximizing their ability to participate in school or learning activities.
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.
  • Maintains health and safety of orthopedically handicapped and medically fragile students by being aware of environment and the potential hazards of each child's actions.
  • Assist students with personal hygiene; wash hands and faces; monitor individual toilet schedules; toilet students and change diapers and clothing as needed.
  • Operates a variety of medical equipment including oral suctioning, gastronomy and orthopedic equipment.
  • Assist students with severe eating problems and monitor self-feeding students as directed by a teacher; use gastronomy and suctioning equipment and take appropriate action when students have difficulty while eating.
  • Monitor and control student behavior in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Attend periodic and special training and in-services related to medical interventions and the instructional program.
  • Assist students with braces and wheelchairs and other orthopedic equipment; position and reposition students as needed.
  • Assist students with selected learning activities; assist students individually and in small group settings; open and close books, remove and add papers in notebooks.
  • Assist students getting on and off bus, including students in wheelchairs; accompany medically fragile students on the bus and on field trips as assigned.

  • Delaware State Certification as: (DE 1571) Special Education Teacher of Students with Disabilities and a core content area.   See Attached

  • Bachelor's from an accredited college or university in Exceptional Children/Special Education or related discipline applicable to teaching assignment.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 
    Teacher Certification - Delaware Code Title 14 Section 1500
    NOTE:  A minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required for all employees of the Seaford School District. 
    APPLICATION PROCEDURE:  Interested and qualified candidates should complete an online application. 
    NOTE:  Currently employed staff members interested and certified/licensed in this position will be given first consideration and should remit a staff transfer request on the Seaford School District website www.seafordbluejays.org no later than the application closing date referenced above. 
    SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:  All new state employees will be required to participate in the State of Delaware's Direct Deposit system.  With direct deposit, wage and salary payments are deposited in the employee's bank account via electronic funds transfer.




















  • All final candidates for employment must have a satisfactory criminal background check before being placed on contract/payroll as per State of Delaware regulations. Candidates must call the Delaware State Police at (800) 464-4357 to make an appointment.  The cost of the criminal background check is $65 (expense borne by the prospective employee).  Final candidates must also receive a satisfactory child protection registry check.
    Final candidates must also produce documentation of Mantoux skin test results for entrance to school system.
    The State of Delaware has initiated a lag pay policy which means that new employees will receive the first paycheck at the end of the second pay period of work.
