General Purpose

Train to become a Relay Technician through hands-on experience, formal technical coursework, and guided mentorship under an experienced Area Relay Technician. This role builds the foundational knowledge and skills required to progress to a journeyman-level position, supporting the reliable operation of substation protection, control, and metering systems.

Responsibilities

A Relay Technician Trainee develops a working knowledge of substation equipment and systems while assisting with the installation, maintenance, testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and repair of equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor-based protective relays; indicating and kWh/kW metering; recording devices such as sequence of events recorders and digital fault recorders; and control systems associated with breakers, transformers, regulators, capacitors, reactors, and related substation apparatus. The role also supports remote control and monitoring systems, including SCADA.

This position requires strict adherence to safety standards and company policies. Work may be performed in confined spaces, at elevated heights, and with specialized equipment such as bucket and boom trucks. The role may involve working independently or as part of a team, responding to emergency conditions, and maintaining responsibility for assigned tools, test equipment, and vehicles.

What you'll be doing:

  • Attend technician training schools to learn relay standards and theory and complete electronic courses as specified for the Relay Technician Trainee program.
  • Assist and complete work under the direction of Relay Technicians and Area Relay Technician as outlined on the Relay Technicians' job description.
  • Keep and assist relay technicians in keeping records and files of work performed, reports on outages and trouble, and equipment records.
  • Under supervision, the trainee participates in diagnostic and analytical testing of substation equipment, including power factor testing, transformer turns ratio testing, insulation resistance (megger) testing, and other assigned evaluations. The trainee will also gain experience operating substation equipment, including switching and grounding activities, in accordance with safety protocols.
  • The typical duties described herein represent a major portion of the job. Other similar duties may be assigned. When management determines that it is efficient to do so, employees in this classification may be assigned duties of less complexity.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED, or proof of equivalent
  • Certification in an electrical apprenticeship program or equivalent program
  • Demonstrated ability to manage workload and use computerized test program
  • Basic computer skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, and Internet)
  • Candidate must have good driving record
  • Must be able to obtain a CDL
  • Strong ability to follow safety polities and procedures
  • Must have passed relay seminar exam
