Is being an insurance sales agent worth it?

Insurance sales agents earn commissions based on policies sold, with income potential varying by experience, location, and sales skills. The role often requires strong communication, persistence, and knowledge of insurance products, and income can be inconsistent initially. It can be a rewarding career for those who excel in sales and customer service, but it also involves ongoing training and self-motivation.

What is an insurance sale agent?

Insurance sales agents are professionals who help clients understand and purchase insurance policies that meet their needs. They often work for insurance companies or brokerages, selling various types of insurance such as life, health, auto, and property. In addition to selling policies, they explain coverage options, answer client questions, and assist with claims or changes to policies. Their goal is to match clients with the best coverage for their situation while ensuring all paperwork and legal requirements are met.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an insurance sale agent?

To thrive as an Insurance Sales Agent, you need strong sales acumen, product knowledge, and typically a state-issued insurance license. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software and quoting systems is important for managing leads and processing applications. Excellent interpersonal skills, active listening, and resilience help agents build trust and maintain client relationships. These skills and qualities are crucial for meeting sales targets, ensuring client satisfaction, and maintaining regulatory compliance in a competitive industry.

What are typical challenges faced by insurance sale agents during their first year, and how can they overcome them?

New Insurance Sales Agents often face challenges such as building a client base from scratch, handling frequent rejection, and staying organized with lead management. Success in the first year usually depends on persistence, proactive networking, and leveraging mentorship or training programs provided by the agency. Agents can overcome these hurdles by setting realistic goals, continuously improving their product knowledge, and seeking feedback from experienced colleagues to refine their sales approach.

What is the difference between Insurance Sale Agent vs Insurance Underwriter?

Employer & Industry UsageInsurance agencies, brokersInsurance companies, underwriting firms

Insurance Sale Agents primarily focus on selling insurance policies to clients, requiring sales licenses and customer interaction skills. Insurance Underwriters evaluate risks and determine policy terms, often needing similar licenses but with a focus on analysis. While both roles are integral to the insurance industry, their daily tasks and skill sets differ significantly, with agents emphasizing sales and client relationships, and underwriters concentrating on risk assessment and policy approval.

Is it hard to make money in insurance sales?

Insurance sales agents can earn varying income levels depending on their experience, sales skills, and the commission structure. Success often requires building a client base, strong communication skills, and persistence, as income can be inconsistent initially but may increase with experience and performance. Many agents supplement income through renewals and referrals.

Job description

Insurance Sales Agent | Earn Up To $185K+ย

$22/hr guaranteed base + uncapped commission | No insurance experience required | Midvale, UTย

Job Summaryย

Earn up to $185K+ in total compensation (base, bonus, and commission) working warm, high-intent leads: new inquiries from people actively shopping for auto, renters, and homeowners insurance. No cold calling, no purchased lists, no door knocking. These leads are warm, but they don't close themselves. You'll handle objections, cross-sell, and ask for the sale on every conversation. If you're a proven top performer in sales in any industry, we'll teach you insurance and pay for your license.ย

Training and Licensingย

You don't need an insurance background. We will teach you. Our paid, three-phase training program guides you through every aspect of the insurance sales process: earn your Property & Casualty license (company-paid, a credential you keep for your entire career), shadow live calls with experienced agents, then take your own calls with a dedicated coach. Training runs 6โ€“8 weeks, full-time, onsite in our Midvale office. Top performers can earn a hybrid schedule with 2 remote workdays per week.ย

Responsibilitiesย

  • Work warm, high-intent leads from customers actively shopping for auto, renters, and homeowners coverageย

  • Recommend coverage, explain policy features, handle objections, and closeย

  • Meet individual sales goals in a performance-driven environmentย

  • Accurately document customer interactions in our CRMย

  • Complete company-paid licensing and compliance training on the clockย

Qualificationsย

  • 1+ years in sales, customer service, or a call-center environment (any industry)ย

  • Proof you were a top performer: you can point to numbers such as close rate, quota attainment, or rankings that show you outperformed your peersย

  • Strong communication and active-listening skills; self-motivated, goal-oriented, and coachableย

  • Ability to attend 6โ€“8 weeks of full-time onsite training in Midvale, UT, and live within 60 miles of our office for this onsite roleย

  • Ability to pass the Utah Property & Casualty state exam and meet state licensing and background-check requirementsย

  • CRM experience is a plus, not requiredย

Compensationย

  • $22/hour guaranteed base pay, including during paid trainingย

  • Uncapped commission plus performance bonusesย

  • Total compensation up to $185K+ (base + bonus + commission)ย

Work Environmentย

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.ย
