Required CredentialsLaw degree, USPTO registrationEngineering or science degree, USPTO registration
Work EnvironmentLegal and intellectual property officesPatent offices, research labs, or manufacturing settings
Industry UsageBrand protection, marketing, legalInnovation, technology, manufacturing
Common Search/ComparisonTrademark vs Patent Examiner

While both roles are part of intellectual property law, Trademark professionals focus on brand names and logos, ensuring they are legally protected. Patent Examiners evaluate inventions and technical innovations for patentability. The key difference lies in their focus areas: trademarks protect brand identity, whereas patents safeguard technological inventions.

What does a trademark professional do?

Trademark professionals are experts who help individuals and businesses protect their brand names, logos, and other identifying marks through trademark registration and enforcement. They assist with conducting trademark searches, filing applications, responding to office actions, and handling disputes or infringements. Their work ensures that a brand’s intellectual property is legally protected and helps clients avoid costly legal issues related to unauthorized use of their trademarks.

How much do trademark examiners make?

Trademark examiners typically earn a salary ranging from $50,000 to $90,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and federal pay scales. They often work in government agencies and require knowledge of intellectual property law and examination procedures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a trademark attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Trademark Attorney, you need a law degree, admission to the bar, and expertise in intellectual property law, particularly trademarks. Familiarity with trademark search databases, filing systems like the USPTO’s TEAS, and legal research tools such as Westlaw is typically required. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting laws and advising clients. These competencies are important to ensure accurate trademark filings, protect clients’ intellectual property rights, and navigate complex legal processes.

What are some of the typical challenges faced by trademark professionals in managing global trademark portfolios?

Trademark professionals often navigate complex legal landscapes when managing global trademark portfolios, as each country has its own registration processes, regulations, and enforcement mechanisms. Coordinating filings, renewals, and protection strategies across multiple jurisdictions requires strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Additionally, trademark professionals must stay updated on international treaties and emerging threats such as counterfeiting or cybersquatting, often collaborating closely with legal teams, clients, and international agents to ensure comprehensive brand protection.

Job description

Are you an experienced Trademark Paralegal who wants to be part of a collaborative, tech-forward team? Our firm is looking for a detail-oriented professional to support trademark prosecution and portfolio management.

We're not your typical law firm. We value teamwork, efficiency, and exceptional client service, and this position has no minimum billable hour requirement.

What You'll Do:

  • Prepare and file U.S. trademark applications and prosecution documents with the USPTO, including new applications, office action responses, and trademark renewals
  • Assist with trademark searches, filings, renewals, maintenance, and portfolio management
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for trademark clients, communicating directly to obtain information and documentation needed for trademark applications, office action responses, and renewal filings, including acceptable specimens of use, dates of first use, ownership information, and other supporting materials
  • Monitor trademark deadlines and coordinate with docketing staff to ensure timely filings
  • Prepare client reporting correspondence and assist with trademark status updates
  • Coordinate foreign trademark filings and work with international associates when needed
  • Collaborate with attorneys, fellow paralegals, and administrative staff to provide exceptional client service

What We're Looking For:

  • 3+ years of trademark-specific experience
  • Proficiency with USPTO trademark systems, including Trademark Center, TEAS, and TSDR
  • Knowledge of U.S. trademark prosecution, maintenance, and renewal procedures
  • Familiarity with international trademark filing procedures, including the Madrid Protocol
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Confidence communicating directly with clients and the ability to explain trademark filing requirements in a clear, professional manner

Bonus Points For:

  • Prior experience in a boutique intellectual property law firm
  • Experience supporting both trademark and copyright matters
  • Experience with trademark docketing systems and portfolio management software
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

Why Join Us?

  • Competitive salary with no billable hour quota
  • 401(k)
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Health savings account (HSA)
  • Paid time off

This is a client-facing role that offers significant responsibility and direct interaction with both attorneys and clients. You will play an active role in the filing, prosecution, and maintenance of trademark portfolios rather than serving solely in an administrative support capacity.

Join a growing intellectual property law firm where your contributions matter and where you'll work alongside a team dedicated to protecting innovation, brands, and creative assets for clients around the world.
