What is a Temporary Technical Game Designer?

A Temporary Technical Game Designer is a professional hired for a limited period to work on the technical aspects of game design, such as scripting gameplay mechanics, implementing interactive features, and optimizing game systems. They bridge the gap between design and programming by collaborating with artists, developers, and other designers to prototype and refine gameplay experiences. Their role often involves using game engines and scripting languages to bring game concepts to life quickly and efficiently. These positions are typically project-based or to cover short-term needs within a game development team.

What are some common challenges faced by Temporary Technical Game Designers when joining a new development team mid-project?

Temporary Technical Game Designers often face the challenge of quickly adapting to existing workflows and understanding the current state of the project. They must rapidly learn proprietary tools, codebases, and design documentation while building effective communication with the team. Balancing the need to meet tight deadlines with maintaining high-quality work can be demanding, especially since temporary roles usually require immediate productivity. However, this environment also allows for rapid skill development and exposure to diverse design processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temporary Technical Game Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Technical Game Designer, you need a solid grasp of game design principles, scripting or programming skills (such as C# or Blueprint), and experience with game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine, generally supported by a relevant degree or portfolio. Familiarity with version control systems, prototyping tools, and sometimes knowledge of visual scripting or animation systems are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and adaptability help you integrate feedback and work effectively with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualities are crucial to rapidly deliver innovative gameplay features and ensure smooth technical implementation within project timelines.

Job description

Technical Game Designer

Remote โ€“ US and Canada only

We are a small studio dedicated to crafting unique and high-quality interactive experiences, and we are looking for a talentedย designer-programmer hybridย who will collaborate with both the engineering and design teams. The goal in this role is to drive the creation and improvement of core gameplay and technical systems and tools highly tuned for the level of rich feedback and player immersion that helped define our games.

An example week for this person might be: Attend a design meeting and discover the need for a new camera feature to support a new content release. Program the camera feature and jump into the level editor to test and refine its implementation. Then, improve the level editorโ€™s toolset to enable the rest of the design team to make full use of your new feature in future levels. Of course, the role isnโ€™t limited to just camera features. Any interactive system applies โ€” procedural animation, cloth simulation, player controls, AI creatures, NPC interactions โ€” use your imagination!

What you'll do here:

  • Crafting technical systems that enable gameplay (either alone or with a small team)

  • Create fluid user interactions with rich feedback and polished game feel

  • Enjoys enabling team members by improving the creative pipeline

  • Is comfortable with cross-disciplinary work and collaboration

Must haves:

  • Proficient in C++ (preferred), C, C# for quickly prototyping 3D gameplay

  • Visual scripting

  • Multiplayer game development

  • Online operation of a live game

  • Ok to take a test as part of our process

Nice to haves:

  • Seek adventure and uncertainty in exploring experimental and risky game concepts

  • Believe in the practice of rapid prototyping and relentless iteration

  • Have a desire to create meaningful, enriching experiences that touch and inspire playersย

Perks:

  • Paid Time Off, Holidays and Two Weeks Winter Breakย

  • Employees and their dependents get medical, dental, and vision coverage, regardless of their level, tenure, or position within the company. Moreover, these benefits start on the first day of the jobโ€”thereโ€™s no waiting period before they kick in.ย

  • Pet Insurance for those who need it too.

  • Compassionate leave for employees who needs to take care of their family members

  • Pre-tax wellness stipend

  • Pre-tax work from home stipend

  • Access our savings plan (401K program) with company matchย

  • Mental health resources including Headspace membership and Employee Assistance Program (EAP)ย

  • Discount portal for everyday goods and services

  • Employee inclusive and diversity initiatives such as Grow Together

  • Support for personal professional development

We look forward to meeting you!
