Temporary Systems Administrators are IT professionals hired on a short-term basis to manage, maintain, and support an organization's computer systems and networks. They perform tasks such as installing and configuring software and hardware, monitoring system performance, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring security protocols are followed. These roles are often filled to cover staff absences, handle special projects, or address increased workload during certain periods. Temporary Systems Administrators need to adapt quickly to new environments and are expected to possess strong technical and problem-solving skills.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a temporary systems administrator?

To thrive as a Temporary Systems Administrator, you need a solid understanding of network infrastructure, server management, and troubleshooting, typically supported by a degree in IT or related field and relevant experience. Familiarity with operating systems (Windows, Linux), virtualization platforms, Active Directory, and often certifications like CompTIA Network+ or Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) are commonly expected. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to quickly adapt to new environments help individuals excel in short-term assignments. These skills and qualities ensure reliable system performance and smooth operations during transitional periods, minimizing downtime for organizations.

As a Temporary Systems Administrator, you may encounter challenges such as quickly learning the organization's specific network configurations, adapting to established IT protocols, and building rapport with the existing IT team. Since you'll likely fill a short-term need or cover during transitions, there can be pressure to resolve issues and maintain uptime with minimal onboarding. • Serve as a payroll team liaison for project teams, providing guidance on timekeeping, payroll processes, and issue resolution.
  • Complete unemployment earnings requests accurately and within required timeframes.
  • Set up new craft payroll team members, including salary and pay-related updates, and process terminations in the payroll system.
  • Support employee timekeeping activities, including reviewing and correcting time entries as needed.
  • Perform historical payroll corrections, ensuring proper documentation and alignment with labor and payroll records.
  • Review and validate labor hours and prevailing wage information to support accurate payroll processing and compliance.
  • Collaborate effectively with individuals at various organizational levels and from diverse backgrounds to maintain strong working relationships.
  • Work closely with other payroll teams, including payroll tax and payroll systems, to support a cohesive and efficient payroll operation.
  • Leverage Excel and payroll systems to perform analytical reviews, identify discrepancies, and support continuous improvement in payroll accuracy and efficiency.

Essential Skills
  • Bachelor's degree or Associate's degree with 1+ year of payroll experience.
  • Experience working in a payroll environment, preferably supporting large or multi-state employee populations.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including data views, graphing, pivot tables, and VLOOKUP functions.
  • UKG (or E-Time) experience, with the ability to navigate and utilize workforce management/timekeeping tools effectively.
  • Proficiency with 10-key data entry for efficient and accurate numerical input.
  • Ability to perform detailed payroll audits, identify discrepancies, and execute accurate corrections.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and work with large data sets.
