Job description

Title:
Temporary Sewing Technicians (Supporting NASA at Johnson Space Center)

KBR is seeking temporary (six-months) Space Suit Sewing Technicians to support our SPACE SUIT DESIGN TEAM for KBR's Science and Space division.
The Space Suit Sewing Technicians will be responsible for fabrication, assembly and repair of soft-goods components and assemblies. Proficient in the use and operation of the following industrial sewing machines, Straight Stitch (single and double needle), Walking Foot, Bartack, Buttonhole and 3 Thread Rolled Hem Serger. Candidate will be required to complete corporate and contract safety training, familiarization with Total Safety Task Instruction (TSTI) and training on operating procedures and desk instructions. Perform duties in accordance with established flight and training process procedures and work-authorizing documents. Proficient in reading soft-goods fabrication and assembly drawings. Proficient in the fabrication of soft-goods patterns.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Sew materials by hand and/or sewing machine, to join, gather, reinforce, or decorate materials or fabricated articles.
  • Cuts materials, according to specifications, or cuts excess material or thread from finished product, using blade, scissors, or electric knife.
  • Examines and measures finished articles to verify conformance to standards.
  • Monitors machine operation to detect problems, such as defective stitching, breaks in thread, or machine malfunction. Mounts attachments, such as needles, and adjusts machine guides according to specifications. Places spools of thread, cord, or other materials on spindles, inserts bobbin, and threads ends through machine guides and components.
  • Positions and marks patterns on materials to prepare for sewing. Positions materials through feed rollers and guides, or positions and maneuvers under sewing machine presser foot and needle during operation. Removes finished materials from sewing machine. Replaces needle and cleans/oils sewing machines to maintain equipment.
  • Records amount of materials processed in production logs.
  • Responsible for the quality and accuracy of the product fabrication according to the fabrication instructions and/or drawing. Uses specialized automatic or semi-automatic sewing equipment and other equipment as required to fabricate products.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Requirements:

  • Monitors machine operation to detect problems, such as defective stitching, breaks in thread, or machine malfunction.
  • Capacity to work in a team environment.

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent GED
Years of Experience: 5+ of related experience
PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Experience sewing on space flight programs and products.
WORK LOCATION
Webster, TX
This position is located onsite at customer facility.

Basic Compensation
$59,700K - $89,600K
This range is for Webster, Texas only
The offered rate will be based on contract affordability and the selected candidate's working location, knowledge, skills, abilities and/or experience, and in consideration of internal parity.
Additional Compensation
KBR may offer bonuses, commissions, or other forms of compensation to certain job titles or levels, per internal policy or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be in the form of sign on bonus, relocation benefits, short term incentives, long term incentives, or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
