What is a temporary project manager?

A temporary project manager is a professional hired on a short-term basis to lead and oversee specific projects within an organization. They are responsible for planning, executing, and closing projects while ensuring that objectives are met on time and within budget. Temporary project managers often fill gaps during staff shortages, manage special initiatives, or bring specialized expertise to a project. Their contracts typically last for the duration of the project or until specific goals are achieved.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary project manager?

To thrive as a Temporary Project Manager, you need solid project management knowledge, organizational skills, and often a bachelor's degree or relevant experience. Familiarity with project management tools like Microsoft Project, Asana, or Trello, and certifications such as PMP or PRINCE2, are highly valued. Strong leadership, adaptability, and effective communication help you quickly integrate with teams and drive projects to completion. These skills ensure that projects are delivered on time and within scope, even within the limited timeframe of temporary engagements.

What are some unique challenges faced in temporary project management roles compared to permanent positions?

Temporary project management roles often require professionals to quickly adapt to new organizational cultures, processes, and teams. Since projects are time-bound, there is usually a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and immediate expectations for results. Building trust with team members and stakeholders in a short time frame can be challenging, as can gaining access to resources and information. However, these roles offer valuable experience working in diverse settings, enhancing adaptability and problem-solving skills.

What is the difference between Temporary Project Management vs Project Coordinator?

AspectTemporary Project ManagementProject Coordinator
CredentialsPM certifications (e.g., PMP), relevant experienceBasic project management or related certifications, experience often preferred
Work EnvironmentTemporary, project-based, often on-site or remoteOngoing, supporting project teams, often on-site or remote
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across industries for short-term projectsCommon in various industries for supporting project execution

Temporary Project Management involves leading projects on a short-term basis, requiring advanced certifications and leadership skills. In contrast, Project Coordinators support project teams with administrative and logistical tasks, often with less emphasis on leadership. Both roles are essential but differ mainly in scope, responsibility, and duration.

Can a temporary project management work part-time?

Temporary project management roles can often be part-time, depending on the employer’s needs and project scope. Many organizations hire project managers on a flexible schedule, especially for short-term projects or specific deliverables, and relevant skills include scheduling tools like MS Project or Trello. Candidates should review job descriptions to confirm work hours and expectations.

Can you get a temporary project management job with no experience?

Temporary project management roles typically require some level of experience or related skills such as organization, communication, and familiarity with project management tools. Entry-level positions may be available for those with strong transferable skills or relevant certifications like CAPM, but most employers prefer candidates with prior experience or training. Gaining relevant knowledge through courses or certifications can improve chances of securing such roles without prior direct experience.

This role is intended for experienced project managers who can bring structure to the work, keep teams aligned, and help clients move important priorities forward. You will manage day-to-day delivery, coordinate across client, Microsoft, and Centric teams, and make sure scope, schedule, budget, risks, issues, decisions, and documentation are clear and well-managed

In this role, you will:

  • Keep clients, Microsoft stakeholders, and Centric teams aligned through clear status reporting, meeting follow-up, issue management, and risk management.
  • Use Centric's Delivery Excellence practices and tools - our standard approach for managing delivery - to bring structure, consistency, and transparency to project delivery.
  • Partner with the client PMO and delivery teams to tailor the project plan, governance approach, deliverables, and documentation to the client environment.
  • Facilitate meetings, track actions and decisions, manage RAID logs, and help teams stay focused on the right priorities.
  • Support change management coordination, delivery documentation, milestone evidence, and other project needs.
  • Communicate early when scope, timing, budget, or stakeholder alignment needs attention.

A successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Strong ownership of day-to-day project delivery and follow-through.
  • Clear communication with clients, technical teams, business stakeholders, and internal leaders.
  • Practical problem-solving and the ability to bring order to complex or fast-moving work.
  • Strong facilitation skills that help teams align, make decisions, and keep momentum.
  • Comfort adapting to different client environments, project sizes, industries, stakeholder groups, and delivery methods.
  • A learning mindset and openness to using tools, including AI, to improve delivery quality and efficiency.

Who You Are:

  • 5+ years of project management experience leading projects or workstreams for large organizations, ideally in consulting, professional services, or client-facing enterprise environments.
  • Experience managing scope, schedule, budget, RAID, communications, stakeholders, and delivery documentation.
  • 3+ years managing Microsoft 365 / O365 deployments or related Microsoft ecosystem projects in a consulting, professional services, or client-facing enterprise environment.
  • Experience working across different project sizes, business areas, industries, delivery methods, or stakeholder groups.
  • Experience applying waterfall, agile, iterative, or hybrid delivery approaches based on client needs and project constraints.
  • Strong client communication, facilitation, expectation management, technical translation, and stakeholder alignment skills.
  • Experience in the Microsoft partner ecosystem or with Microsoft-funded, co-funded, or partner-supported engagements is preferred.
