Keep Children Safe While Supporting Summer Fun!

The Childrenโ€™s Center of Hamden is seeking a dependable and safety-focused Temporary Lifeguard to support our therapeutic recreation programming during the summer months. In this role, youโ€™ll help maintain a safe, positive pool environment by actively monitoring swimmers, enforcing pool rules, and responding appropriately to emergencies. Youโ€™ll play an important part in ensuring children and adolescents in our care can safely enjoy recreational and therapeutic water activities. Strong attention to detail, professionalism, and a calm, confident presence are essential to success in this position.

What Youโ€™ll Do

As Temporary Lifeguard, you will:

  • Actively monitor pool and deck areas to ensure swimmer safety at all times.
  • Enforce pool rules and safety procedures in a consistent, respectful manner.
  • Respond to emergencies, including rescues, first aid, CPR, and use of AED as trained.
  • Conduct routine safety checks of the pool area and equipment before and during use.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and secure pool environment.
  • Support staff with safe swimmer supervision during scheduled programming.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support safe aquatics programming.


What Weโ€™re Looking For

  • Current Lifeguard Certification (American Red Cross or equivalent)
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid Certification (or included in lifeguard credential)
  • Experience lifeguarding in a pool setting preferred.
  • Ability to remain alert, calm, and responsive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to enforce rules appropriately.
  • Commitment to professionalism, dependability, and youth safety.
  • Ability to work a flexible temporary schedule based on program needs.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and remain attentive for extended periods.
  • Ability to swim strongly and perform rescues, including lifting/pulling individuals in water as needed.
  • Comfort working in outdoor pool settings with exposure to water, humidity, heat, and pool chemicals.
  • Ability to follow all safety protocols to maintain a secure and welcoming environment.
  • Potential exposure to bodily fluids and other environmental hazards in residential, school-based, or milieu settings.
