Job description

Position Information Under supervision, performs a variety of semiskilled road maintenance and minor construction work on County roads; and performs related work as required. The Community Services Department - Roads & Stormwater Division is currently accepting applications for Intermittent (hourly) Maintenance Worker - Roads positions. The intermittent hourly Maintenance Worker - Roads will work on an as needed basis and with no guarantee of hours per week/month.

This is a seasonal/temporary position. Intermittent Hourly positions are not Benefited positions. Additional position information: The intermittent positions will also hold flagging and traffic control responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications One year of previous full-time experience in performing basic road maintenance or construction work; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. License Or Certificate A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification

A valid Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with a tank endorsement must be obtained within six months of date of appointment. Continued employment is contingent upon maintaining a valid Class A CDL with a tank endorsement (This requirement is not applicable for seasonal/temp positions). The Ideal Candidate Will Have Experience working in road maintenance including asphalt, ditch cleaning, signage and weed control.

An American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) certification is highly desirable. A Commercial Driver License (CDL) is highly desirable. Conditions of Employment Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy, new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation. Effective January 1, 2025, the $39.00 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check, although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment

Selected applicants will be required to submit to a medical examination. The cost of the examination will be covered by Washoe County. Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.

This is not a classified position and is not covered by a collective bargaining unit. "Intermittent hourly employee" means a person who is not employed on a fixed schedule and works on an "on-call" basis. Please be advised that upon appointment an Intermittent Hourly employee cannot work a regularly scheduled work schedule and must work less than 1040 hours in any fiscal year.

Intermittent Hourly employees are "at will" employees and serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority. Retired PERS (Public Employees' Retirement System of Nevada) employees are responsible for contacting PERS to make sure that they do not go over the assigned PERS earnings limit for a fiscal year in order to retain retirement benefits.
