Description

LAC Federal is seeking a customer-focused Library Access Services Specialist I to support the library operations at college campus in Germantown, MD. This position serves as the first point of contact for library patrons by providing exceptional customer service, circulation support, technology assistance, and general information services. The successful candidate will help ensure the smooth day-to-day operation of the library while assisting students, faculty, staff, and community members with accessing library resources and services.  


Location: Germantown, MD
Employment Type: Full-Time, Temporary (40 hours per week)
Estimated Assignment: July 2026 - August 2026 (or ASAP through approximately August 1, 2026, with the possibility of extension) 


Work Schedule:

  • Monday - Thursday: 9:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. 
  • Friday: 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. 
  • 40 hours per week 

Responsibilities

  • Provide outstanding customer service to in-person and virtual library users. 
  • Assist patrons in locating library materials and using the online catalog, discovery tools, databases, and other library resources. Respond to information requests using sound judgment and refer complex inquiries to appropriate library or College departments. 
  • Offer directional assistance and orient patrons to library spaces, services, and online resources. 
  • Provide basic technology support and troubleshoot issues involving computers, laptops, tablets, printers, scanners, and assistive technology. 
  • Assist patrons with computer session management and library technology resources. 
  • Staff the library service desk, performing circulation functions including checking materials in and out, updating patron records, and processing overdue materials. 
  • Maintain accurate circulation and service desk statistics and other operational records. 
  • Resolve routine patron account issues and assist in maintaining a welcoming, professional library environment. 
  • Open, close, and secure the library according to established procedures. 
  • Report facility, maintenance, or public safety concerns to appropriate personnel and assume responsibility for library operations during designated shifts when supervisory staff are unavailable. 
  • Interpret and apply College policies regarding patron confidentiality (FERPA), copyright compliance, and acceptable use of technology. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's degree preferred. 
  • Previous customer service experience required; library, academic, or higher education experience preferred. 
  • Experience working with computers and standard office software. 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to assist a diverse population. 
  • Ability to learn and apply library policies, procedures, and integrated library systems. 
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy. 
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a library or academic environment. 
  • Familiarity with library circulation systems or integrated library management systems. 
  • Experience providing basic technology support to end users. 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the library for extended periods during the workday. 
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or move library materials and book carts weighing up to 25 pounds. 
  • Ability to frequently bend, reach, stoop, and use a computer and other office equipment for extended periods while assisting patrons and performing circulation duties.
