What is a temporary flight attendant?

A Temporary Flight Attendant is a flight crew member hired for a limited period, often to meet seasonal or operational demands. Their duties include ensuring passenger safety, providing in-flight service, and assisting during emergencies. While temporary, the role typically requires the same training and qualifications as full-time flight attendants. It can be a great opportunity for those seeking flexibility or experience in the airline industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a temporary flight attendant?

To thrive as a Temporary Flight Attendant, you need excellent customer service abilities, strong attention to safety, and the ability to handle emergency situations, typically supported by a high school diploma or equivalent and specialized airline training. Familiarity with in-flight safety equipment, intercom systems, and airline policies is required, along with current certifications such as CPR and first aid. Outstanding communication, flexibility, and teamwork help individuals excel in this fast-paced, dynamic environment. These competencies are vital to ensuring passenger safety, delivering a positive travel experience, and adapting quickly to varying schedules and duties.

What are the typical work schedules and travel requirements for temporary flight attendants?

Temporary Flight Attendants often work variable schedules that may include weekends, holidays, and overnight shifts, depending on the airline's operational needs and flight routes. Assignments may range from a few weeks to several months, with the possibility of frequent travel to both domestic and international destinations. While the role provides unique opportunities to explore new places, candidates should be prepared for irregular hours, time away from home, and adapting to new crew teams on different flights. Temporary placements may also offer valuable experience and networking opportunities for those interested in pursuing long-term positions within the airline industry.

What is the easiest temporary flight attendant job to get?

The easiest temporary flight attendant jobs are often with regional or smaller airlines that have less strict hiring requirements and higher turnover rates. These positions typically require a high school diploma, basic customer service skills, and certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), making them more accessible for entry-level candidates. Prior experience in hospitality or customer service can also improve chances of securing such roles quickly.

Inflight Crew members must prioritize safety, adapt to customer-facing scenarios, and serve with optimism. You should have excellent interpersonal skills, good judgment, and the ability to resolve issues with understanding and compassion. You should represent United with pride and distinction. United's flight attendants have a comprehensive route network, available 24/7 for global assignments. Dependability and timeliness are crucial for success. You should be a team player with a consistent track record of working independently and as part of a team. The goal is to create memorable experiences for every customer, every flight, every day, by exploring new cultures and having fun.

United offers travel privileges, exceptional benefits like 401(k), health/dental/vision insurance, and an Employee Assistance Plan, along with paid time off for sick and vacation. Starting hourly flight pay starts at $28.88/hour, with top-of-the-line pay at $67.11/hour. Seniority-based pay increases and additional compensation for language skills, lead positions, and international trips are also available.

A comprehensive training program for flight attendants is also provided. After completing the training, full-time employees can be assigned to one of United hubs (relocation funds not provided). United provides a $140/week per diem, accommodations, breakfast, and lunch during training.

Requirements

To succeed in this role, candidates must be at least 20 years or older, have a high school diploma or equivalent, 2 or more years of college preferred. Effective communication is crucial in high-stress situations, and professional appearance, excellent grooming standards, and willingness to follow uniform, hair, tattoo, and piercing guidelines are essential.

Tattoos are not permitted on the head, hands, or neck, but visible tattoos on arms, wrists, legs, and feet should not be larger than a credit card / employee badge or covered with standard uniform pieces. Decorative covers, adornments, and jewelry on teeth or in the mouth are not permitted. Proficiency in operating electronic devices is required for required tasks.

Current physical possession of a valid U.S. passport book or foreign passport book with applicable visas and eligibility to travel globally without restrictions is required. English language proficiency is also required. The candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States, willing to complete pre-employment DOT drug screen, comprehensive background checks, fingerprinting, and vision/hearing tests.
