Job description

About this Job The mission of the Louisiana Department of Health is to protect and promote health and to ensure access to medical, preventive, and rehabilitative services for all residents of the State of Louisiana. Learn more about Louisiana Department of Health The Louisiana Office of Public Health Laboratory has an opening for a Public Health Laboratory Scientist Supervisor to oversee the Virology Serology and Sexually Transmitted Infections (ViSTI) department of the OPH Laboratory in Baton Rouge. The ViSTI department is responsible for performing laboratory diagnostic testing for sexually transmitted pathogens of public health concern, and serves as laboratory support for multiple different Health programs throughout the state.

Preference will be given to applicants with supervisory experience and applicants meeting CLIA General Supervisor qualifications for high complexity Bacteriology, Syphilis Serology, Parasitology and General Immunology. Applicants for this position must possess or be eligible to obtain a Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME) clinical laboratory scientist license, which requires national certification by ASCP, AMT or AAB. Minimum Qualifications A bachelor's degree in a biological, environmental, or chemical science plus three years of experience in a biological laboratory, chemical laboratory, or environmental laboratory; OR A master's degree in a biological, environmental, or chemical science plus two years of experience in a biological laboratory, chemical laboratory, or environmental laboratory; OR A doctorate in a biological, environmental, or chemical science one year of experience in a biological laboratory, chemical laboratory, or environmental laboratory. SPECIAL SECURITY REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be able to pass a criminal background check and/or security clearance, including but not limited to those required for the Federal Select Agent Program and the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners license requirements. CLINICAL TESTING POSITIONS: For positions which involve processing and analysis of human specimens and/or the generation or interpretation of laboratory results that may be used in the diagnosis or treatment of a disease or condition in humans, the incumbent must have a current license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist Generalist (CLS-G) or a Clinical Laboratory Scientist Specialist (CLS-S) issued by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME).

A temporary license to practice as a CLS-G or a CLS-S issued by the LSBME shall fulfill this requirement only for the limited time granted by the LSBME. The incumbent is required to satisfy the requirements for a CLS-G or CLS-S permanent license prior to the expiration of the temporary license. Job Duties and Other Information Job Duties: Supervise the personnel and plan activities for the Virology/Serology & STI Department. Organize the workload and set the priorities for analysis of specimens received. Perform bench analysis as needed.

Review all test results, quality control, and quality assurance data generated by the Virology/Serology & STI Department for precision, accuracy, and timeliness as required by lab procedures. Detect and solve problems and potential problems before unreliable results are reported to specimen submitters. Prepare the Virology/Serology & STI Department to meet quality standards as required by accreditation agencies, including CLIA and others as necessary; and as specified in the OPH Laboratory Quality Assurance Manual.

Supervise and train Virology/Serology& STI Department personnel in performance verification, function verification, preventive maintenance, and routine use of laboratory equipment used in the Virology/Serology & STI Department; including the biological safety cabinet, analytical balances, automated enzyme immunoassay systems, microtiter plate washers, microtiter plate readers, immunoassay instruments, microscopes, pipetters, and other equipment that becomes part of the unit. Supervise and train Virology/Serology & STI Department personnel in sample preparation, sample analysis, quality control, quality assurance, and safety procedures. Prepare purchase order requisitions for supplies and equipment needed by the Virology/Serology & STI Department.

Review, revise, develop, and recommend to the Department Manager, analytical, quality control and quality assurance methods and procedures that are applicable to the laboratory.
